A Nation On The Edge

My Dad and I watched the Trinidad and Tobago vs. England match in the FIFA World Cup. On paper it sounds like a mismatch. I mean two countries vs one. Trinidad and Tobago vs. England. But the reality is, TnT is only a population of 1.3 Million vs the 50 Million of England.

The match was going pretty well for Trinidad until the 84th minute when England scored. It was a let-down. But I'm pretty impressed with TnT to get to the World Cup and most importantly, to compete. I felt they played with the English and while they did not match them, they certainly gave them a run. The down side was, two goals scored by Trinidad were disallowed.

Just to balance things out. I was born in TnT, lived there for 7 years, came to Canada for 2 and then returned to Trinidad for 2 years. Then came back to Canada. I have not been back to Trinidad in 25 years. It is with regret but it is part of my heritage and culture. I know Canada is my home and I am proud of that. Trinidad is my fond memories and that connection I share with my parents.

It would be nice, almost 'Herculean', if TnT actually made it to the next round. Is it in the realm of possibilities? I would like to think yes but I think they need to not only win their next game but probably score at least two goals.

Otherwise, I really don't give a damn about it. It was only because I was living near Yokohama in 2002 when the last World Cup took place did I have any interest. It is hard not to get caught up in the magic and excitement of World Cup when everyone is talking about it. Also the fact that Beckham is a mega-superstar in Japan and due to this, I always knew what was happening with him. I do remember thinking that Ronaldinho was the best player at that World Cup and now he is the best player in the world.

My other team is of course Japan. I hope they do better. I would like them to get into the next round but they really dug a hole for themself when they lost to Australia. My pick to win everything: Who knows, I'm not an expert. I liked Brazil in 2002 and I like them now.

Go SoCa Warriors!!
