Paris Revisited

Paris was not named after the Greek hero but after a tribe who lived on the site of the Notre Dame. They were called the Parisii.

There are more tourist attractions per square meter than anywhere else that if you trip, it is probably a place where some famous revolution, battle, or person -happened, occurred, died, buried.

I visited Sven and Violine and Terese, their daughter on Friday. It was great to see them even though we were a bit late. Well Delphine was late, I was on time. But truth be told, I was so tired after walking around and around! We had a quiet dinner together and I will be staying tonight at their place before leaving for London tomorrow. I loved Paris and there is still so much more to see but I want to go back to London. I still did not see Musee D'Orsay nor did I make it to Palace of Versailles. I think those will have to wait.

Les Invalides
I wanted to visit the tomb of Napoleon. It was located in a place that was once a hospital to injured soldiers. It is now a museum too. Napoleon is located in a Church crypt. His body was first buried where he was exiled but then returned to Paris where it was interred in a crypt befitting an Emperor. It was very beautiful. Simple and very Romanesque. His tomb filled the lower crypt while the upper crypt was filled with the tombs of his closest generals and relatives

What a guy! That Napoleon!

There were whole sections dedicated to war. From early bows to swords to chain mail and armour. It is interesting to see how war has changed. One od the interesting things qt the museum was that it was lined with old cannons from past battles. I liked the wing dedicated to the Resistance during WWII. It was stunning to actually see the Nazi flags. Daunting.

Notre Dame
Spent the rest of the day at St. Michel and at Notre Dame. Montreal has a small version of the Cathedral but you have to pay to go to the one in Montreal and I have not been. Here in Paris it was free. It is unbelievably huge! I was lucky enough to see part of a Mass and to see the procession of Elders all wearing capes with the insignia of either the Templars or the Malta Cross. One of the elders was carrying the Crown of Thorns. I read somewhere that the Crown was owned by one of the French Kings and then was given to the care of Notre Dame. I saw a crown covered in Gold but I don't know if was 'real' or not.

Japan Revisited
There are more Japanese here than anywhere else! I got on a train and it was like being back in Japan. Everyone everyone was Japanese! I did talk to a few of them. I guess they really love it here. And they spend a LOT of €€€€!

The Louvre
It was free to go to the Louvre today and so I decided to go to see the inverted Pyramid that plays such a prominent role in The DaVinci Code. It was interesting but unspectacular. But still kinda cool to see it.

Old Friends
I did not get to spend q lot of time with Delphine. She was working and we met for dinner before she went to her friends place to sleep. If you have heard me snore you will understand! but it was great to spend time with her and talk to her and renew our friendship.

alts, travel, friends, japan
