They fall in love at thirteen.

They've always been friends, Nakajima and Shida. They've always been the odd couple of best friends - odd because Nakajima is a boy and Shida is a girl.

Shida had always been something of a tomboy - a leader on field, outspoken and bright and challenging and Nakajima had always been a laid back character - the type that chilled out and smiled too much and they were some what of an odd pair, only that they were perfect for each other.

At twelve, Nakajima starts to notice girls and girls start to notice him. But at twelve, Shida is his best friend and wasn't that much of a girl in Nakajima's eyes. At twelve, Nakajima realizes that he likes girls but he likes hanging out with Shida more than any else even though girls had soft smiles and smelled nice. Shida, with her loud voice and aggressive, bossy ways who managed to make him smile and laugh, who managed to make him follow her even at his most stubborn moments. The Shida who was strong and sweet both at the same time.

It is at thirteen, when Shida refuses to look into his eyes anymore, that he realizes that maybe, maybe, she might mean more to him than he initially thought.

Falling in love at thirteen is awkward, he concludes.

He tries to go on as usual, but Shida is testy towards him and pulls away when he reaches out to touch her like they did and really, he doesn't understand why she needs to be such a girl about everything.

Unfortunately, when he reaches his fill of it, he tells her just that and she looks at him with tears in her eyes and declares in a loud voice that she is, in fact, a girl. She runs away from him and ignores his calls and his messages and his e-mails.

He corners her in school and tells her, quite loudly that he did, in fact, know that she was a girl and that while it did escape his notice for a little while, he knew it all too much and really - being ignored by the girl he loves was plain torture and that's when Shida hugs him fiercely.

Neither of them talk about the tears staining his uniform.

They lose it at seventeen to each other.

It wasn't planned like other couples their age nor did they have to sneak into karaoke rooms or love hotels. They had been hanging out like always when a tickle fight breaks out and suddenly, they're on the floor and Nakajima's hand is on Shida's breast and lips cover lips and they find themselves unable to stop. It had been familiar and warm but fast and they bask in the afterglow, chests heaving against each other.

The next day, Shida's parents tell her that she's already betrothed.

Nakajima is twenty when he comes out with his first book. He doesn't know what propelled him to do it, but he finally wrote it down - the story of them. The story he didn't dare tell anyone else, about bitter young love, bitter first love. He is still as easy going as always but he knew, he knew, that life and love wasn't easy. Shida reads his book and wants to tell him that it wasn't his fault, that it hadn't been his fault. But Shida doesn't have the power to go near Nakajima anymore.

At twenty two, as soon as Shida finishes her university degree, her parents finally set up the omiai to meet her future husband. She is not happy but she is obedient and so she dresses in her best kimono and takes little steps towards the function room where both families are supposed to meet.

She doesn't expect the face she sees inside and apparently, neither does he.

They look toward their parents asking for an explanation but their parents simply talked about negotiating the businesses and profit. So Shida continues to stare at Nakajima while Nakajima tries very hard to concentrate on anywhere else.

At twenty three, they are both married with the blessings of their parents and Nakajima comes out with another book, a sequel to the first. It is about believing that wherever your path leads you, you'll always come home to your soul mate.

The book ends happily.

And so do their lives together.
