The colors that Hershey chose for its Reese’s pieces has always baffled me but today while lounging around in my pajamas and dividing my attention between Lewis dot structures for iodine and the candies in question I may have figured it out. Brown is the color of dirt and trees...brown is the earth. Yellow is like the sun and the sky...yellow is heaven. Orange is the color of fire...orange is hell. That’s how it always goes. My favorite things end up having some religious symbolism and it’s ruined for me. Simon, in Lord of the Flies was a fun, likeable character until - damn you Golding! - he turned into a messianic figure. I never forgave him for that one. I suppose it fits though. This is why whenever I eat a box of Reese’s pieces all I get are the orange ones and when I’m done I get a migraine and have to cower from the light. I loves those little candies.
