There's been so much in the Israeli press about the huge numbers of rockets militants are firing from Gaza into Israel, if/when/how Israel should (re-)invade Gaza, and polls and speculation related to the upcoming Israeli elections that I feel I ought to at least mention the subjects.  Having done so, I don't really have anything novel to say

Hmmm....

According to the article you link to, Yescha(sp) Federman will refuse to serve in the IDF because she feels that the army is not "her" army, i.e. soldiers broke into her house and evicted her.
I don't sympathize with her at all, but I don't think your comment is quite fair.

I don't understand the last sentence of the fifth paragraph, what does recycling water have to do with philanthropy?

I edited the comment about Federman for accuracy and the end of the 5th paragraph for clarity (though I think now it might just be more convoluted ;)).
