It feels like forever since I've last posted, though it's only been a little over a week...I've actually been doing a fair amount of work, motivated largely by finally starting to get it through my thick skull that this process needs to be directed by me (while I have faith that if I send my adviser something he'll give helpful feedback, he isn't going to tell me how to move from library research to field research and writing). Anyway, who wants content about my actual life when instead you can have links!?
I love that I came across both
this new lesbian movie and
this fabulous picture in the course of doing work (reading a Jordanian blog, to be specific). Then in my more academic reading, I saw a citation about one of the weirder historical events I've heard of in a while. Like the picture it's feline-themed, and so strange I just had to share:
the Great Cat Massacre.
In case anyone's been living under a rock and missed hearing about this, a bunch of Muslim militants committed attacks in Mumbai/Bombay and killed over a hundred and fifty people.
Florida is moving in the right direction -
a judge there recently overturned its ban on gay adoption.
While
the actual technology discussed in this article (about modifying elephant DNA to produce a mammoth) isn't that exciting, the prospect of Jurassic Park totally is :).
Meanwhile in this portion of the world, the situation is Hebron has gotten even crazier, but I don't see much point writing more about it 'til things resolve themselves one way or another. I would, however, like to point out that the word "provocation" wasn't used once in
a recent article talking about some of the worst settler behavior (towards the IDF; what they've done to Palestinians is far worse), though if I had the misfortune to be an IDF soldier serving in Hebron right now I'd feel awfully provoked.
So
remember that I posted a link about how advertisements for an Israeli political candidate wouldn't be allowed on the city bus unless her sleeves were lengthened? Oops,
they did it again, except this time it's billboards (on which Jerusalem apparently doesn't allow pictures of women at all), and the candidate in question is Tzipi Livni.
ACTION ALERT FROM THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF UNIVERSITY WOMEN
With only two months left in office, the Bush Administration's Department of Labor released regulations that will make it harder for most workers to take leave under the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA). These regulations will take effect January 16, 2009-just four days before President Bush leaves office-but you can
act now. Urge House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to make expanding FMLA a priority in the 111th Congress so that America's families don't have to choose between keeping a job and caring for themselves or a loved one.
In other "do you get the feeling Bush is trying to see how much he can get away with before he leaves office" news,
this year's White House Hannukah card includes a xmas tree...
FOOD
I hope that those of you who celebrate it had a happy Thanksgiving. In honor of the holiday, here's
a recipe for vegan (coconut milk) pumpkin ice cream (I haven't actually tried to make it, so if you attempt it, please let me know how it comes out!).
There are, however, a few great recipes that I first made years ago for which I haven't posted links, so now seems as good a time as any to remedy that.
Coriander Chicken with Peanut Sauce (while the chicken fat does help bring this recipe together, both the marinade and sauce are so good that, for the vegetarians who use meat substitutes, I'd encourage giving it a try with them).
Spinach Kugel/Casserole. Super easy and tasty.
Ginger Baked Tofu Triangles.
Lastly (in the "food" section),
here's a compilation of useful vegetarian/vegan/locavore websites.
