When Crash miraculously won the Best Picture Oscar last year, I gained new respect for the Academy. For once they didn't go with the obvious choice...they went with the better film. I was hoping it was a sign of good things to come and judging by this year's nominees which were announced this morning, I think it was.
There were some very interesting surprises. I did a pretty good job of guessing the nods and the ones I guessed wrong I was actually very happy about. Ex. Letters from Iwo Jima nominated for Best Picture instead of Dreamgirls, Paul Greengrass (United 93) nominated for Best Director instead of Bill Condon (Dreamgirls), Mark Wahlberg nominated for Best Supporting Actor instead of Jack Nicholson (they were both excellent in The Departed but Mark was FABULOUS), and Borat being nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay. It's too bad Thank You For Smoking did not get nominated for Adapted Screenplay but there were just too many good screenplays this year! Something had to get the ax.
I'm so excited about the Best Picture race. I think this is the first year in a really long time that that category is so wide open. With the exception of Babel (I know I haven't seen it yet but I'm fairly certain it's the weakest of the five), I'd be happy if any of those films won.
So mad props to the Academy for avoiding old habits and nominated those people and films that truly deserved recognition this year. I can't wait to see how it all shakes down!
