Title: April Fool's
Author: Summercloud
Rating: G
Summary: Really, it would have been a better idea to call in sick today.
Author's notes: Totally unrelated, but anybody listen to that podcast by that priest in the Netherlands? Apparently he played a really good April Fool's joke today.

“Just kill me now,” Aoko moaned as she dropped into her chair on Saturday morning. Saguru nodded in agreement as they both eyed Kaito with dread. “Honestly, April first is my least favorite day. Ever since we were little...”

Saguru gave her a weak grin. “Any idea what we can expect?”

She shrugged. “Nope. Sorry.”

Saguru sighed mournfully. Kaito was literary bouncing in place. He had never seen anyone actually “quiver with anticipation” before, but the phrase fit the magician perfectly. Add in that demented grin-

Really, it would have been a better idea to call in sick today.

“Happy April Fool’s,” Akako said as she put her bags under her desk. “Any clues yet?”

“Nope.”

“None at all.”

Akako’s sigh was an exact match for Saguru’s. “I was afraid of that.”

First period passed-nothing.

Second period-still nothing.

Third period-strangely enough, still nothing.

And so it went. The entire class was on edge. Teachers kept looking over their shoulders as they wrote on the blackboard. When somebody dropped their pencil the entire room jumped.

But still-nothing.

It was when they were all walking home that Aoko finally got up the nerve to ask. “Kaito?” She glanced around nervously for moral support, then continued, “what happened to your April Fool’s joke?”

Kaito grinned, his entire face lighting up in delight. “Didn’t you know?” He looked around at his audience: Aoko, morbidly curious; Saguru, hiding dread; Akako, outwardly aloof. Perfect. “The waiting is the worst part.”

“Wha-”

Kaito’s grin widened. “Happy April Fool’s.”
