Riley scratched the back of his head, crossing the room awkwardly in the silence that hung between them. He leaned on the ladder that lead up to the loft, forearms resting on one of the higher rungs.
"I don't know," he shrugged, quickly scanning his mind for anything that might say otherwise. She was pretty, but he didn't think that counted for much, "We're friends. I'm taking her to the gala."
"Really?" Riley asked before he could stop himself. By the time he realized what he'd said, it was too late. Miles would've seen the way his eyes slightly widened, and for Riley.. that was surprised.
So he shrugged again, casually flipping his bangs out of his eyes.
"That's nice, I suppose," and a quick subject changer, "So who are you taking to the gala?"
"Tracey," he answered simply, still watching Riley.
"If you hurt her," Miles went on, going back to the subject of Marlow, "whether you mean to or not, I'll beat the shite out of you. I'll always choose your friendship over hers, but that doesn't mean I won't beat your face in." It was completely true, too - Miles cared more for Riley, as they were best friends for so many years, but he wouldn't let anyone hurt one of his girls, intentionally or not. "So just be careful."
.. Are we breaking up?

Then, he knocked.

"I would have hoped you knew me better than to expect me to open the door for you," he called lightly.

He pushed open the door, walking in.
"What?"
