(no subject)
So I show up for my first day at Outback to train bussing tables under none other that Boyd Atchison, who has told me to buy the darkest jeans I can find that aren't black. So I come in in these really dark, dark blue jeans with that queer-looking yellow thread, and Boyd leads me in through the side door and introduces me to the British-speaking manager, Dave. Dave looks at me and says "Ulright, where ya pants?"
"I got 'em on," I say.
"No you don't. Can't work in those"
He throws me and shirt, and Boyd tells me that he did the same thing to him. I don't have enough time to drive home and back in 5:00 traffic, so I go over to Wal*Mart and buy some mediumly-dark-blue Wrangler jeans for $12.99. I come back, and he tells me that I need to get white shoes, but he lets me work anyway. Today I got my dad to bring home an old pair of white tennis-shoes, one of which I had to glue back together at the sole, and tonight those worked great. The floor in the back of the kitchen is nasty and slick -- shrimp, cheese, honey mustard (annoying and disgusting), soda, water, meat, soggy bread, ranch, lettuce, oil.
Bussing tables is great. It gets pretty busy and fast-paced, so time really flies... I usually find myself wondering what time it is about every hour. It's pretty mindless too, and not that tiring. If you're working with fun people, it's fun too. Everyone -- cooks, servers, managers, everyone -- tries to swat your bus tub out of your hands if it's empty. Last night, I got "fumbled" 6 times. Tonight, Only 3. I need to work on my grip.
Basically all of the bussers really love it... they call it the best job you can get. On really busy nights, pay + tipshare evens out to over $10/hr, and you can work tons. If I work on weekdays, I can come in after school and take the opening shift from about 3:30--8:45, which means I can get home in time for dinner with my family, or I can eat at any Outback or Carraba's or Bonefish Grill for 50% off + a free drink. Awesome, I know. Everyone come and work with me (and Boyd and KD).
