How can someone believe that there is no god? Or, at least, some sort of being that exists outside of the dimensions we perceive? The universe had to come from somewhere. Even if you believe in the big bang, where did those materials come from? You can explain it with physics, but there's an unbreakable physical rule in the three-dimensional world ( Read more... )

As for Evangelical Christian oppression... I agree with you for the most part. People started saying "Jesus Christ!" as an expletive not because they were trying to oppress Christians, but because Christianity is regarded as the religion of America.

In the past couple of decades, some affirmative action type stuff started in order to encourage religious diversity. That's a fundamental goal of American government: to preserve / protect the minority. Now, diversity is encouraged in American society... stuff like special scholarships for African American applicants at colleges. We joke, "Well where are the Caucasian scholarships??" And yes, that's not being "equal," but to practically restore equality, you give the minorities some perks.

(*I'm not justifying cases for the government to have affirmative action in the case of religious minorities ... seperation of church and state and all that. I'm just saying that, really, that's the American way, so society will follow that trend with religious diversity.)

There is something to be said, however, about society's moral state relative to the ideal morals given by the Bible. Someone could say that society oppresses Christianity by doing bad things, but too bad. That's how things are supposed to be, how things always will be. There's no reason to complain about that, becuase isn't that sort of the point of religion? Jesus says to be "a light to the world." Everyone (even Christians) acts out of line with a lot of religions (not just Christianity).

I'll get to the other stuff later.

the funny thing about American society is its hypocrisy on (among the millions of other things) encouraging diversity. There are months for people -- women's history month, african american history month, hispanic month --, scholarships, laws, etc. But still, we have oppressed minorities...??

Some Harvard Grad students did a study about 2 years ago with job applications, giving IDENTICAL resumes and info for jobs, just different names -- black sounding and caucasian sounding names. Guess who got more callbacks? Yep, the white names. Women make 75 cents for every dollar a man makes. That comes out to be an average of $10,000 less per year. Is it b/c less of them work? No, almost 80% of women are in the workforce. And since 1979, they've gotten more college degrees (and higher ones) than men. Gays--there's a fun subject for me-- yep, its still legal in most states to fire a homosexual from ANY job just because their sexuality. It's also legal to deny to sell them a car, rent them a house, etc. Hispanics, Asians, Women, and Blacks... all have higher percentages of people in poverty than whites. They make less in every job, and are less likely to get top positions -- women are 8% of executive jobs in top corporations. That's almost nothing -- if you realize 92% are MEN. And there are slightly (like 51%) more women in the U.S. than men. Blacks are more likely to be in jail and to get the death penalty -- even tho white executives/corporate crime kills more people than ALL violent crimes added together.

rar. sorry i just took a class on all this. And wrote a paper on the women's statistics. go America. ugh.
