I made it back home to the outskirts of New Orleans two days ago. There wasn't nearly as much damage as from Katrina. I did see a few houses near the Baton Rouge area where trees had fallen through them. It seems a lot of the severe damage was due to falling trees out that way. Near where I live, it was mostly lost shingles, fallen trees, and some fallen signs.
My own house fared very well. I lost half of a shingle. My neighbors took more damage, but only a little. The tides of Lake Pontchartrain are actually flooding the streets periodically, but that should equalize out in a few days.
There is no power, and limited services. Power is expected to come back within a week, though it may take 2-3 weeks for some areas. Water works, but pressure is low. There is very limited availability of gasoline, but that should improve within a day or two.
I must say things were handled a lot better this time around than with Katrina. Things are coming back in a fairly timely manner and the re-entry is going smoothly.
