Dear Lewis & Clark Environmental Studies Majors,
The reason the environmental movement has failed to significantly alter political and economic discourse is because of the moral stand you've made. By labeling the messages you carry with a clear moral connotation you essentially ostracize any sympathetic individuals who happen to be on the fringes of your movement. For instance, while you may have particular qualms with capitalism and the field on environmental economics, realize that at the moment there are no alternatives that have a chance of changing the international system short of divine intervention. I personally apologize for many individuals in my field who try to quantify the worth of the environment in order to save it. I realize that you may find it completly abhorrent to assign monetary worth to either an ecosystem, individual species, or human being, but please get over it. Focusing on the immorality of economics, especially a subset of the field which is trying to help, not only marginalizes yourselves but also removes a very important tool you have to affect change in your life time. So politely take a real course on environmental law, politics, and economics, before making grandiose claims about how uncomfortable you feel when anyone mentions private property. Come the day of the revolution I'll lend my body and gun to overthrowing the forces which seek to sell or body, mind, soul, and environment to the highest bidder. Until then its better to learn and use the tools of the oppressor rather than simply deny it by living in a commune until the magic revolution occurs.
Love,
A Lewis & Clark Economics Major, and Self-Described Environmentalist
p.s. Piss off you damn hippies. Fuck if you know a thing about economics. Its all about scarcity get used to it. I will personally shank you next time.
