That "broadband on laptop in the 'Real World' but not through WiFi" thing

To begin - been a doctor for 2 weeks - going better than I thought, dome a week of nights and didn't screw myself up too much.
Rearrangement of flatmates is progressing without any input from me, and hence i have no idea who i'll be not-really living with this year.
Ok - to the /\, does anyone know anything, have any information/experience or otherwise be able to advise on the accessing of internet through 3G modems on Laptops? Am finding it quite difficult to find a decent comparison of the various providers on teh web and would like a bit of help.
Basically, PRI and Ninewells are somewhat abysmal (Matt - Etymology; from Abyss?) in that they only allow internet access from the library on their computers and won't let you use web-mail, so-called 'Personal' sites (because EVERYONE uses Facebook to try and get a date) or download anything more exciting than an excel document. In an attempt to get a reasonable degree of contact with the outside world, I am seeking alternatives.
So far, have found some (not sure about LJ's policy on stating company names) that offer reasonable prices, some offering less-so, some with unlimited access, others with limits, and generally finding it hard to decide which, if any, I should go for.
Anyone got an oar?
