It's all about the Benjamins

Ok, I had meant to do this last night or the night before, but when it actually came down to doing it, that whole procrastinating thing kicked in. But anyhow, now that I've started I think I'll be able to finish this easily.

Last Friday night I took the bus to the airport in order to get tickets for my flight back to Homer next month after finals. Well it turned out I couldn't quite get them yet, because I had a mileage plan with 625 miles saved up that I wanted to use, but instead of being able to do that right there, I have to call a number on Monday and say what I want to do. Basically if this works out, I'll be able to chop the costs in half, to about $150 or so. And I really hope it does, because as it is I'm going to be running low on money very soon.

About 5 days ago I found out I'd have to take one more class than I thought in order to graduate next semester. In addition to all the core and CS classes that I had to take, there was also this little blurb in the catalog saying "Two writing intensive courses and one oral intensive course" that I needed. Now, my Senior Project class will take care of both the oral and one of the writing intensive courses, but that leaves me with one more to take. Fortunately I was able to find a class to fit into my schedule, and I've heard that if I can read at an 8th grade level I won't have any trouble in the class (and as I generally do very well in English classes it's all the more relieving).

Still though, that's going to be 18 credits total, which comes down to 6 classes I have to take next semester if I want to graduate. I've taken 17 credits before a few times, and the results have been rather ugly regarding my grades. Obviously I don't have a choice in the matter this time, and so all I can do is just buckle down and revamp my study habits (read: quit procrastinating). But even with that concern addressed, there's still an issue with costs. 18 credits + all upper-division = a lot of money. Even after my student loan gets taken into account, I'm still going to be writing a check for about $660 or so, and that doesn't even count books. One of the things this means is that I'll have to hold off on taking a Java-certification exam, something that I was really hoping I could do so I'd have something to show on my resume. And the sad thing to all of this is that, had I know about the requirement months ago, before I came back up here, I could've signed up for it this semester and got it out of the way. Instead, I ended up taking a Japanese class so I'd have over 12 credits and be considered full-time. Now I have nothing against that class; in fact I enjoy it a lot and find it very stimulating. But from a practical standpoint, it has only set me back and is partly responsible for my budget constraints. Anyhow, what's done is done, and all I can do now is try to get through this year intact and finally be done with it all at the end.
