OKAY, so back in the beginning, there was the First Civilization, who were basically sci-fi Tolkien elves. They lived a super long time unless you killed ‘em, and were like, super smart/in possession of an extra sense that allowed them to “know” shit. It is potentially a sort of precognosis thing, since they were able to predict that Ezio would show up where he was AND that desmond would be viewing Ezio’s memories through the animus. They created humanity in “their own image” to serve as slaves, basically, and controlled them with things that are now called Pieces of Eden! And now the headcanon begins.
(I don’t take bio, so uh, don’t mind the specifics, this is all just general guessing and stuff.)
Pieces of Eden are basically machines that manipulate the behavior of the brain’s synapses or whatever, and so they can control a human’s will, and by extension of that, their movements. Now, the pieces don’t work on members of the First Civilization themselves, which has something to do with the genetic difference between the two. A deliberately engineered difference.
Due to EVENTS in history, there was eventual interspecies… breeding. Humans with partial First Civ DNA were immune to the effects of AT LEAST the Apple of Eden, though not always like. Immediately and stuff.

man there is all kinds of sneaky sci-fi shit in AC you wouldn't expect to find there. that is nuts I NEED TO PLAY THIS. and yeah i'm pretty spoiled for it, but you know.
is there a specific number of pieces btw or is it just like, THERE ARE THINGS, ENJOY.

THERE IS SNEAKY SCI-FI everywhere, all in the DNA and crap and everything! Basically, anything built by the first civilization reacts differently to those who have dna similar to Those Who Came Before, aka hybrids like ezio or des or altair! so like, anyone can use the Apple, but if you want to use it to kill people with INSANITY you have to be a hybrid. sometimes, the tech will 'talk' to them, or at least let them see knowledge without it driving them crazy immediately, but it is still p overwhelming in large doses! When Ezio uses the apple A LOT, it pretty much demolishes his health bar and his knees give out. I think it interferes with the human aspects of their brain, and so the more First Civilization you have in you, the better you are at handling it.
The same goes for illusions/mind control! Mind control doesn't work at all, but illusions do, only the hybrids know there are illusions-- like "feeling" something being wrong-- and then their eagle vision allows them to see what is "true." Here, I'll copypaste what I wrote in Sakura's old permissions post:
Ezio has human/First Civilization hybrid DNA, which means that, unlike normal humans, neural interference does not affect his natural understanding/comprehension/awareness/etc of his surroundings, but his nerves are still susceptible to external influence. For example, he would be able to feel the sensation of say, being poked with a stick, but he would know he isn't actually being poked with a stick. Potentially maddening, don't you think? His Eagle Vision would also negate any visual illusions, since he can simply search for something 'real' and it will turn gold for him.
There are I think 50 pieces, but two were destroyed... Ezio's is the Sixth Apple, which is about illusions and mind control, but the 15th century papal staff had the ability to manipulate things kinetically when used in conjunction with the Apple.
