Um, isn't the three columns just a reference to this page? That page's not how LJ will look, that's a link list to actual sample pages.

The three columns page is just a technical page with links to specific pages. You can see the actual prototype here.

That prototype Main Page at http://livejournal.design.ru/main-page/ still has three large, ugly columns taking up the top 70% of the page (at least in my browser) so it's not an improvement.
