Igrick: About forbidden topics.

This is a translation of this entry by igrick.

Something had happened here at LJ just yesterday that I mean to use as an example. One of the popular journals has been suspended for propaganda of pedophilia. LJ practices zero tolerance towards pedophilia. That means that any journals caught on spreading pedophiliac content will be frozen immediately with no amnesty and the person who created that journal will be named persona non grata. That is, any journal created by this person will be deleted with no warning.

But this case is a little more complicated than that. Journal's author insists that journal was dedicated to fighting pedophilia, not spreading it, and that the situation itself is a result of pedophiles' fight against people who fight pedophilia. In other words, its complete bullshit.

So what had happened in reality? Firstly, the journal has been suspended because of an entry containing photos of above-mentioned nature. They were covered partially with black squares but it's still clear what is going on there. Moreover, the entry had contained a link to the site where this kind of photography could be found along with other materials. That is not mentioning the fact that the entry had contained methods of concealing one's true inclinations.

Secondly, journal's owner was warned that content of this nature is prohibited on the pages of LiveJournal. Several times.

Of course, the journal was composed to the key of "look how awful this is", "look, this is where they're hiding" and "look what these perverts are discussing" and so on. But let's take a look from outside. Where is the difference between spreading and fighting against?

If someone creates a journal where they post child porn photos while arguing how this is unacceptable and gross - is this spreading or fighting against? Where is that thin line that separates evil intent from other intents?

Or another example: if someone starts a journal describing the evils of drugs and discussing prices, places to buy, ways to store and transport ("look what they thought of to avoid responsibility!") and who to ask for drugs. This is too questionable and hence, unacceptable.

But then something even more strange had happened. Instead of the situation being discussing with Abuse team, another journal had been created with the same entry in it sans the photos. It was immediately frozen, of course. But the entry had been reposted and even appeared in Self-Promo area. Meaning that some user had paid for a post containing links to child porn to appear on main page of LiveJournal. What IS that? This is simply beyond good and evil.

Pedophilia fighters has chosen a very incomprehensible tactics. Instead of reporting these photos and sites to appropriate authorities (as Abuse Team had done right after suspending the journal) they started fighting Abuse Team's decision and spreading the materials.

So with all above-said in mind, I consider Abuse Team's action completely justified and correct.

Do not switch.

igrick, lj
