Saw the Buena Vista Social Club remainders (apparently they now call themselves Buena Vista Mi Corazon or something like that) again last night and they were quite good.
I have decided that hanging out with other English speaking students or tourists at all is annoying though. Being here for so long, and since most of the other students both at my school and at others are only here for a couple weeks, I have been cycling through friends and it is annoying to keep having to meet new people and ask the same questions. Plus, hanging out with Guatemalans cures the 'too much English here' problem.
And all the local places are way, way cooler than the touristy places on the main strip. If you wander over literally a block out of tourist zone everything is suddenly 1/3rd the price and more fun. My favorite place so far is Ceviches Mex (ceviche is a raw meal item made with shredded fresh shrimp and lime and a bunch of other stuff. The acidic lime is supposed to "cook" the shrimp but I dunno... I don't eat it). It is the sketchiest looking place ever, inside and out, but when you can get a gigantic meat cheese bean lettuce sourcream burrito for about $2 and a strawberry milkshake for a buck you don't complain. Local bars are the best. Sorry for the lack of pictures, I've been getting lazy and not carrying my camera around.
Speaking of cheap things I have a new habit that I will miss when I come home, walking by the park and getting an ice cream cone from one of the random vendors who sit around in the sun with their little carts full of dry ice cooling a huge tub of ice cream that they sell for Q1.
I have to get home now though as it is raining, before the street turns into a river that I have to walk through.
