[Stephane sneaks up behind Hanna as he's scribbling in his notebook and elbows him in the back, keeping a perfectly balanced tray of champagne glasses in the opposite hand.]

Watch out. LaFevre's doing patrols today.

[Stephane makes a meaningful glance across the lawn to where one of the head servants in meandering through, keeping an eye out for anyone not doing their job.]

[Hanna blinks and quickly hides his notebook.]

Thanks...You saved my skin, pal.

[He nods quietly and goes back to work.]

How was serving the Duke last night? Did he throw any plates like last time?

[Stephane murmurs out of the corner of his mouth as he passes around champagne with the practiced ease of someone who's been doing this for WAY to long and has figured out how not to let small talk interfere with his job.]

[Hanna gives a light, barely noticeable shake of the head. But he's been working here for long enough to figure out how to talk while still being quiet.]

No, he wasn't nearly drunk enough. He just yelled a great deal.

You're better at keeping him away from the wine, then.

I think he prefers to insult me, my job, my family, whatever he can think of, over drinking. At least it keeps him sober, I suppose.

We could put charcoal in his wig powder, again. I don't think he figured out it was us last time.

[Stephane's intelligent enough to wait until he's right behind Hanna before whispering that one.]

[That nearly makes Hanna laugh, so he has to bite down hard on his lip to stop himself. He gives Stephen A Look, before nodding and smiling.]

[Stephane grins back. Sure, stunts like this could potentially cost them their jobs. But they really are a necessity to stain sane in Versailles. Plus, Stephane is pretty sure everyone else in the palace, nobility included, agree that he deserves it.]

Are you serving at the ball tomorrow night?

I am, actually! I'm looking forward to it.

Man, there's someone you should talk to. This creepy Count guy's been on me all weekend making vague allusions about 'over hearing vital information'. He doesn't seem to believe me that I don't know or care what's going on in the nobles' lives.
