The World Spins Madly On (For Rebekah and Faye)

Of all the lives Elijah had pictured over the last year, this was not the one he expected. How could he? With Mikael gone, with Esther thwarted, surely invincibility was now fact not just highly likely fiction? The whole reason he'd needed to stop Klaus before the ritual was because of his very indestructibility afterward. He'd never expected Mikael to succeed, then, not once Klaus had his army.

And then, when Elijah learned the truth, the desire to destroy his brother had slipped away. Oh, he was angry, no doubt. He wasn't happy with Klaus. He wasn't just going to let him take over the family--and Elijah--all over again. But...what he told Elena was the truth. "He's my brother. We remain together."

Family above all.

Except they weren't much of a family now, broken and betrayed, lost and adrift. He'd taken Rebekah back to New York with him. Kol still was...wherever he was. Elijah had sent him a message to say where they were, implicitly asking him to come home, but so far he'd not rejoined them.

Rebekah tended to look as dazed as he felt. He'd gotten her away from any possible repercussions for her actions in Mystic Falls, and now...what? She needed something to hold on to, something to engage her again in this world that wasn't the one she remembered and now was missing the one stable thing she'd always had. He...tried, but he didn't seem to be enough.

When the plan hit him, the idea that what she needed more than anything else was a friend, someone more like her, less like him, someone to bond with and to pull her fully into this century, he had to smile. Possibly it was like throwing a spark at gasoline and New York would never be the same, but it would certainly be interesting.

"Rebekah?" he called for her, knowing wherever she was in the house she'd hear him.
