Kiss today goodbye/And point me toward tomorrow (For Jack)

Aug 18, 2012 23:40

Elijah had spent the night in his study, in front of the fire, the ring anodized stake in his hands. Rebekah and Kol both wandered in a few times, his sister more openly fretful than his brother, but both of them clearly uncomfortable and uncertain ( Read more... )

Jack stepped forward when he spotted Elijah, away from the wall he'd been standing against, and held his hand out. "Are you ready to do this?" he asked, meeting Elijah's eyes.

He was concerned, he was still not sure how he felt about doing something this irreversable. It wasn't his decision, though. It was Elijah's, and he trusted Elijah to know what Elijah needed to do. So, not 'are you sure', just 'are you ready'.

Elijah smiled when he saw Jack, if a bit tiredly, and reached to take his hand. There wasn't a doubt in his mind about if what they were doing was a good idea. The weapon had to go. They'd spent too long in terror of its counterpart--all their lives, really.

None of them would feel safe until it was truly gone.

"Absolutely," he said with a nod.

He wrapped his hand around Elijah's, and used it to pull him in. "You should probably hold on with more than one hand, then. It's going to be a longer, rougher, trip."

Elijah should, and likely did know that from his last hop to the distant future. This was a bit further out, but shouldn't be hugely worse. Still worth, Jack figured, a reminder.

He ran through a mental checklist while he did it, making sure he had coordinates preset to get them back, after the hop up to watch the world burn, that retcon was there, that he had covered his bases in what he needed to forget.

Elijah moved to him without any protest, wrapping his arm around Jack tightly to make certain he had a good grip, and basically just for the physical reassurance. He was totally certain about trying this, but the nerves as to whether it would work or not had him more jumpy.

What Jack forgot was sort of at the back of his mind. If it truly worked, it wouldn't matter who remembered what because the thing would be gone.

Remembering the last trip, he made a little bit of a face, not necessarily looking forward to the world shifting so much again, but it was worth it. "I'm ready when you are..."

There were ways, with time travel, that Jack could probably make it back to retrieve that weapon. They were impractical, dangerous, and unlikely, but the possibility still existed. Best if he had no idea about any of it - and he wasn't going to tell Elijah about them, anyway. There was no point bringing more confusion to this.

Jack had to do some reaching around to get to his vortex manipulator, but it was something he'd had quite a lot of practice with, lately. He closed his eyes, tightened his hand on Elijah's and pushed the button.

They reappeared about ten feet from the edge of a steep cliff, overlooking a roiling, restless, nearly violent ocean. The light was different, this time: orange, too bright, and the sun was way, way too low in the sky. It was also hot as hell, nearly to the very limit of bearable, even for Jack. This was not somewhere anyone was going to stay long.

As close to the edge as it was possible for them to be.

Elijah felt a little sick this time, whether from nerves or the leap or the location. Seeing the end of the world was really not something he'd ever thought about--too far out, even for him. He clung a little to Jack, breathing slowly, trying to make everything steady--which would be a good thing given how close to the edge they were ( ... )

Jack hadn't been, and still wasn't, sure how well Elijah was going to handle the heat and the proximity of the sun. It had still never crossed his mind to remove Elijah from any step of the process. He watched Elijah closely, though. The flinch and the fact that he was nauseated didn't escape Jack's notice.

And when Elijah held that stake out to him, Jack looked startled. He was startled. This wasn't part of the plan he'd anticipated, and he wasn't sure he was comfortable with it, either. Getting this over with quickly, and them out of there, was still more important to him than asking questions he could get answers to, later.

He took the stake from Elijah, without paying much attention to it, beyond getting its heft and feeling the weight of it. Then he walked it to the edge of the cliff and hurled it, as hard and far as he could over the edge and into the dangerous, foaming, unstable sea.

"We need to get you out of here, Elijah."

Elijah stopped breathing when Jack took the shake, tensed and ready to back up fast if the other man turned on him. No offense meant to Jack, but when the brother you'd loved for a thousand years stuck a dagger in your heart and your parents both tried to kill you--it made you wary. Just giving the thing to Jack showed more trust than he knew he was capable of anymore. Not expecting him to tense would have been too much.

He only took a breath again when Jack threw the stake and turned back to him. After that, he nodded a little, moving back to Jack's side and taking his hand. "I think that would be a good idea." His protection was never meant to stand up to this kind of pounding from the sun, and it was just increasing the nausea.

Jack would never have expected Elijah to do less than tense up. He never expected Elijah to hand it to him at all; the trust wasn't missed, he was just too busy wanting to get Elijah out of the sun and heat to care. Or, as he'd thought earlier, question.

He closed his fingers tightly around Elijah's, and triggered the transport again. This time it was a shorter hop, and when they appeared it was much cooler. There was a faint hum of an engine beneath their feet, a single sofa in the center, facing a view screen, where earth was on display.

"Breathe," he murmured, to Elijah. "And take your time."

Even a short hop made Elijah's head spin as affected by the sun he had already been. The cooler air made it easier to breathe, though, and he moved toward the sofa that seemed to be a bit blurry around the edges until he sat down, nearly collapsed, on the sofa.

Ducking his head, he rested it in his hands, propped on his knees, not even glancing at the view, yet. And he tried to breathe.

"Thank you..."

Jack moved to sit down beside him and rubbed his back, slow but with a lot of weight. Not quite making it a massage, but making it very much felt.

"Just keep breathing. Is there anything you need? What can I do to help?"

Elijah leaned into him, taking the support, needing the support at the moment more than he wanted to admit.

Jack had asked, and he'd promised, given his word that he'd let him know. "Blood. Not a lot, but it would help..." As sick as he felt, it wasn't even appealing, but it would speed up his body's trying to heal from the poison of the sun in his system, the radiation or whatever caused it, that had snuck past his ring.

Jack kept one hand on Elijah's back, providing that support. He used his teeth to jerk open the cuff of his shirt, since he didn't want Elijah to have to move or change positions to get to his throat.

"Take what you need." No hesitation, no doubt, and he didn't need the reassurance of amounts. Elijah was keeping a promise, and so was Jack. More than that, though, Elijah was struggling and if blood helped? It was his.

Elijah reached for Jack's wrist, tugging it lightly to his lips, not bothering to move more. He managed to suppress the trembling a bit, but not the hunger, and when he bit down it was as lightly as possible, breaking skin but gently. Gratitude rolled off of him as he drank.

The heat under his skin eased as he drank, and the spinning of his head ceasing. When he felt more steady, he lifted his head, leaning back against the sofa and Jack's arm. "Thank you..." Again.

Jack watched Elijah feeding, this time. It wasn't something he'd been able to do before. He took full advantage of being able to do it, now. He didn't even flinch when Elijah broke skin, though of course it stung. He was altogether focused on the watching.

When Elijah sat back, Jack leaned back, tilted a little to face him. "You don't need to thank me, but you're welcome. It was beautiful. So is that." He nodded toward the view. Gently redirecting Elijah's attention.

Beautiful wasn't anything Elijah had ever heard a human call feeding, so he gave him a slightly startled look, but smiled slightly.

The nod toward the window got his attention though, finally, and he looked out, eyes widening a little bit. "....It is." He'd never expected to see the Earth from this view, not really, and it was stunning. All the pictures taken by astronauts and satellites did not even begin to do it justice. Wonder flickered over his face, and he got up slowly to move to stare down at it.

"It doesn't seem possible it could...go away." Not after millions--billions--of years.
