At this point, most of my 'expendable funds' (as few as they are) tend to go to perfume components, like a good oakmoss or pure vanilla oleoresin than actual 'perfumes'...but I was inspired by the book and when I saw so MUCH available yesterday, I think I blew a brain cell!
I always feel stupid about writing about scent, because I have so many friends (particularly Naamah Darling) who write well and are much more descriptive than I. Also, Luca Turin himself is so spot-on when it comes to describing professional scents that I have to bow to the master! I have two of his books and am about to get that A-Z scent book he wrote, since it's 1,800 scents (as compared to perhaps only about 100-150 in his "Perfumes" book...and most of them are more recent).
The interesting thing about the old French vintage perfumes is, they seem to grow richer and more appealing as they age. Sadly, I think most of the people 'collecting' on the Internet are doing that for value, not to actually WEAR or USE the perfumes in any way, and that's such a shame. My original Lavin Mon Peche/My Sin perfume (NOT toilet water or eau!) in the Lalique bottle--which was an expensive purchase by my parents when I was young!--is still full of life and is just totally amazing. It's also one of those 'aldehydic' perfumes, which means the aldehydes modify the florals and make them into something mystifying, dark, and seductive. My Sin is something I used to wear every day for almost two decades, and now I ration it out carefully as I purchase other bottles here and there of the Eau or Toilette to 'extend' the glory of it all.
Oh! And I suddenly realised that AMAZING "Vanille Extreme" perfume by Comptoir Sud Pacific is being sold as a discontinued various places on the web! It's a heliotrope/vanilla/tonka/milk/sugar scent that is about as 'pure vanilla' as one can get! Yum!!! It's the best vanilla I've ever found.
