Rumor has it
The Great Gatsby is getting a new film adaptation starring Leonardo DiCaprio as Gatsby (of course), Amanda Seyfried as Daisy and Tobey Maguire as Nick. Baz Luhrmann is reportedly considering directing it.
Leo is an obvious choice for Gatsby, you could say the only choice. Seyfried is a hit-or-miss actress, not to mention too young. She also doesn't seem as conventionally beautiful as I think Daisy should be. I think Michelle Williams would have been perfect. Tobey Maguire can't act but is physically and temperamentally perfect for Nick (he also has a good period look), so I'm hoping the rumors that he's improved are true. Or that the rumor that he has this part is false. I think I'd prefer Colin Hanks or Joseph Gordon-Levitt (JGL is probably too young and interesting, but then we can do an Inception reunion and Tom Hardy can play Tom Buchanan!).
I've been trying to dream cast Tom and Jordan. I've always thought Jessica Biel had the perfect look for Jordan but she can't act unfortunately. Would love to see Liev Schreiber as Tom but he's too old. Then I thought maybe Josh Charles could be good. Then I thought it had to be Bradley Cooper (so big! so WASPy! so uncouth! so angry!), but Katie quickly dashed that dream because he's too hot and blond. I am not sure she's right.
We could really just take the entire cast of Revolutionary Road and put them in The Great Gatsby, which would mean that David Harbour is Tom Buchanan, Kathyrn Hahn is Myrtle Wilson, Michael Shannon (or Jay O. Sanders?) is George Wilson… and Kate Winslet is Daisy. Now I wish this had been the project Kate & Leo had reunited on. Their chemistry would be put to much better use. Not sure if Baz Luhrmann or Sam Mendes would be a better director for it. Leaning toward Baz because he’s more romantic. And he’d be reuniting with Leo for the first time since R+J, awww.
I was thinking last week that I wish Christina Hendricks could play Myrtle Wilson, but she is too beautiful. Basically everyone I have listed has already played his/her character in one form or another. "Mad Men" should have made another Great Gatsby movie redundant since Don Draper is like Jay Gatsby + Tom Buchanan.
