Katie and I saw The Dark Knight tonight. Before I get into the movie, we're going to have some trailer talk:
1. The Spirit. I'm really excited for this movie, but they are advertising it so poorly. It looks confusing. Who's in it? What is it about? You'd really never know from the trailers and ads.
2. Body of Lies. It totally does not matter what this movie is about at all because it stars Russell Crowe and Leonardo DiCaprio and I'd pay to watch those guys fucking raise bees. Leo is doing something he's done before, but Russell Crowe has gray hair and looks totally old and I'd still hit that because Russell Crowe is the best actor ever ever ever and if you don't agree, I'm sorry; it must suck to be so wrong.
3. Terminator Salvation. As I told Katie, this movie is just a test of your loyalty to Christian Bale. I'm going to pass that test and you know why? BECAUSE I MOTHERFUCKING LOVE CHRISTIAN BALE, YOU GUYS. More than anyone. I could write an entire poem about his cheekbones for you, right now, but I'll refrain.
Obvs this movie was awesome, but I have to say that I was majorly confused by a lot of the plots. I really had no idea what was going on with the marked money and the mob and the Joker and whose money was getting stolen and why it was marked, etc. I also don't really get how Batman's sonar cell phone device worked. First of all, how could there be 30 million people in Gotham? No city is that populated. Secondly, if he could hear ever single person's cell phone, wouldn't it just sound like a whole lot of noise? I don't really get how it created images also, unless all the cell phones were cameras or something. Also, that was a totally immoral thing that Batman did, but I liked that. Some of my favorite things about this movie were fucked up things that Batman did. I also didn't remember Rachel being captured. I mean, I figured they were not going to take Harvey home because duh, that was what JUST HAPPENED. It was so fucking stupid of that cop to just put him in a car home instead of driving him herself or getting Bruce to do it.
I think Heath Ledger lives up to the hype and will deserve the posthumous Oscar nomination he is sure to get. Do I think he would get one if he were alive? Probably not, but I'm not going to deny that this is Heath Ledger's best performance I have ever seen. Yes, counting Brokeback. I didn't really love him in that, but he's a revelation here.
My favorite thing about The Joker is something Jacob (of TWOP) once observed about "Gossip Girl"s villains Chuck and Blair. Chuck "never lies and he's never wrong" and Blair "gets so much more shit done by being honest in a fucked-up way than most people do by lying." Did the Joker ever actually lie or did everyone always just believe him? Even that stuff about how he got the scar, you know it's all true since he has a million identities. But I love how no one even questioned that he told them the right places where Rachel and Harvey were. And no one questioned that one of those boats would definitely blow up.
Katie thinks that Aaron Eckhart was almost more impressive because no one talked about him. I disagree, but perhaps that is because I knew I would love Aaron Eckhart. He's the man. He is so perfectly perfect for Harvey Dent it's ridiculous. You could split his face in half right in the middle of his chin dimple. Bee tee dubs, how could anyone think he was actually Batman? Batman does not have The Chin. Also, when he became Two Face, his Two Face scary voice was way better than Bale's Batman scary voice, which sounds kind of like he has a really bad cold and I can't understand anything he says. You totally saw Eckhart morph into that character and it was scary. It's also great that Two Face basically is Anton Chigurh. I wonder if that coin-tossing thing was in the comics? I should read those.
Does anyone remember how Jake Gyllenhaal was rumored to play Harvey Dent for a while? Can you imagine? How gross!
I'm so glad Commissioner Gordon didn't die! I really believed he was dead and I tried to convince myself they could bring him back. Gary Oldman is a genius, but I think he slipped out of his accent a few times. I'm glad they let Rachel stay dead. Maggie G. was totally wasted in that role anyway. Might as well have brought Katie Holmes back.
What I loved most about this movie was how it eschewed the obvious. I thought it was going to end about six times before it really did. Christopher Nolan says fuck you, three-act structure! I thought for sure Two Face would be saved for the next movie. But that would have been a predictable ending, since it's exactly what they did last time. It would have been predictable to have Batman save Rachel instead of Harvey, or even to have him save both. Having him save Harvey is just far more interesting. Putting your sense of duty to the city over love is cold. Although I think he wanted to do that so he could eventually be with Rachel, but still...why didn't he himself go to save her then? I see no real reason why they both couldn't be saved considering, like, twelve people knew where they both were. So ouch, Batman. You totally let your girlfriend die for no reason.
Other things that were awesome:
-Cillian Murphy! That was unexpected, even though Christian Bale spoiled it months ago (I forgot).
-Bruce Wayne, Playboy. He makes Katie and me laugh a lot, with his never wearing shirts and always traveling with a harem.
-The Joker making those people choose whether to kill someone else to let themselves live. How very Twilight Zone!
I think there was more but I am tired and I need to see this movie again in IMAX right now. I can't believe it's #1 on imdb! People think it is better than The Godfather? It's been out for one day!
