Songs in the Key of Abi

I can't stop listening to Animal Collective.

I know some people don't dig their experimental sound - long, meandering songs, often without a discernible melody - but I find their style to be just right. I feel as if their instruments are tuned exactly to my moods; when I turn on Sung Tongs or Feels, my emotions are already laid out in a pattern that fits the album perfectly. I only regret that I didn't come upon these superb albums sooner. Oddly, I went to an Animal Collective concert a few years ago, on a whim; I didn't enjoy their set nearly as much as I think I would now. If you'd like to take a listen, check out the FatCat Records site .

Also, I played some Animal Collective today when I did my aircheck for KSPC, the Claremont Colleges radio station (and best station ever). Hopefully, I'll be a DJ next semester!

On a completely different note, tonight I had a bad run-in with a quite unpleasant woman in the library. During finals week, various groups like to give out free food to students; the library decided to give out pizza in the Founder's Room. I was tutoring at that time, and thought it would be fun to get a slice of pizza at the end. My tutee was very excited at the prospect of free pizza! But as I led him into the room, the woman at the door told me you could only come in with a Claremont ID, and that my tutee would have to wait outside. Irritated but kind of expecting this, I decided to grab a few slices of pizza and bring them out to him - but no! As I turned to leave, the woman rose from her chair and almost shouted, "You can't bring that outside!" I was bewildered. "Can't I just bring it downstairs? I promise I won't eat it in the library." She shook her hood and pointed to a sign near the pizza that read, "YOU MAY NOT BRING THE PIZZA OUTSIDE THIS ROOM." "You'll have to eat that in here," she concluded. I looked down at the four slices on my plate, and at my tutee standing outside the door, and returned the pizza to the box. I tossed the plate and napkin in the garbage and apologized to my tutee. He summed it up nicely: "What a bitch!" Indeed.
