Today my school,
Pomona College, welcomed
James Turrell, an internationally acclaimed artist who focuses on the use of light.
He was there in honor of the opening of his newest work, a "Skyspace" in the Lincoln-Edmunds Courtyard on campus.
His work is pretty cool:
During his talk, Turrell said a few things that I jotted down:
"Good taste is censorship; it's restriction."
"In no way does the artist take responsibility for affirming your taste."
I liked them so much that I wrote them out nicely on separate pieces of paper and had Mr. Turrell sign them for me during the reception. As I had hoped, he found this humorous.
My roommate went for a more direct approach and wrote "I MET JAMES TURRELL! LOOK:" and had the artist sign in a box.
Either way, we got to wear nice dresses and eat brie.
