„It´s been a long time since we were able to play in a good combination like this. Isn´t this great?! I can´t wait to learn my lines! Wah, I am so excited!”
Nagayan was sitting next to Tuti on a bench in the restroom of the photostudio where they had just finished the first photoshoot for their new play. It would contain only four people on stage including him and Tuti, which meant it was going to be a much more intimate play than the ones they had done so far. It was only natural that he was excited and he could hardly surpress the big grin everytime he thought about it.
Despite Nagayan´s joyful speech Tuti remained silent and chose to check his timetable instead of giving his friend an answer.
“Tuti! Listen to me! What are you reading anyway?”
He bent over and looked over Tuti´s shoulder in order to read what was written in the small notebook. Though before he could read anything, Tuti quickly closed the notebook.
“That´s private, you know? Even Nagayama Takashi doesn´t have to know everything.”
Startled by Tuti´s serious voice, Nagayan didn´t know how to react until he noticed the smile, which slowly crept onto Tuti´s lips.
“You are so mean! For a moment I really believed that you just scolded me.”
“And what if I had?” Tuti´s eyes were flashing as if he was ready for a fight.
“Well, I am older than you, it would be awkward if you scolded me.”
“Regardless of their age some people need to be scolded when they obviously don´t know how to behave. And nobody would believe that you are older than me, by the way.”
This kind of talk was new for Nagayan and he was starting to feel annoyed.
“Tuti! What´s the matter with you playing big papa all of a sudden?! You never had a problem with my behaviour so far.”
His earnestly shocked expression changed into a pout when he realized that Tuti was smiling at him again.
“Stop playing those ridiculous games with me. We get to see each other so seldom so you should be a little bit nicer... wha- stop it, TUTI!”
While Nagayan had been busy with pouting and complaining Tuti had reached out to ruffle his hair. Nagayan ducked his head, which was useless because Tuti just tickled his sides instead until Nagayan nearly fell off the bench.
“I had forgotten how strenuous it could be to be with you.”
“But you have to admit that you like being with me after all.”
Tuti laughed out loud after he had said those words, maybe they were meant as irony but the truth was that Nagayan really liked being together with Tuti. A lot.
He smiled warmly at Tuti and his voice was gentle and calm as he spoke:
“Yes, I like being with you. Though I don´t know why. But on the other hand there doesn´t always have to be a reason why you like someone if it just feels right.”
There was an awkward silence and Nagayan only now noticed what he had just said. He had confessed his feelings for his friend in a completely too romantic way. He was afraid to move so he took a careful look at Tuti out of the corner of his eyes. Tuti was sitting beside him seemingly deep in thought and busy with scratching the back of his head. He knew this gesture which was as typical for Tuti as his loud laughter. He hadn´t meant to make his friend feel uncomfortable and he suddenly felt the need to say something. But before he could open his mouth Tuti turned his head and looked at him, smiling lightly despite the hint of sadness in his eyes. As Nagayan hestitantly returned the smile Tuti suddenly stood up and stretched himself.
“We should get out of here before they lock us up.”
He turned around and looked at Nagayan - there was something in his gaze which just wasn´t like him. Nagayan inwardly scolded himself for having said such sloppy words. And he scolded Tuti for his stupid reaction.
“Takashi?... I don´t want to go home, yet. We can go for a walk if you like, but we really have to get out of here... It´s late, you know?”
He must have been pouting because Tuti´s words were the typical ‘oh-no-Takashi-is-pouting-what-should-I-do-to-make-him-smile?’-reaction. Nagayan couldn´t help but smile at his ability to manipulate Tuti even if it wasn´t even intentional. He stood up and walked past Tuti just close enough to let their shoulders touch.
“Going for a walk sounds good. Let´s go.”
They walked for about an hour and talked about work, friends, fans, hobbies and food. The atmosphere was relaxed and they enjoyed the cool night-air but in the end as they were standing in front of the entrance to the subway station this strange silence surrounded them again.
Nagayan was starting to feel annoyed. How long did they know each other? Four years if he wasn´t mistaken (in fact he knew the exact date of their first meeting) and it wasn´t the first time that he had said something nice to Tuti. They had even been on a date once so why was it that they could hardly look each other in the eyes tonight? The next thought made Nagayan´s heart ache: Maybe Tuti didn´t want him to feel this way towards him. Maybe Tuti wanted to be free to find a girl and have a family. Maybe he had never had deeper feelings than friendship towards Nagayan in the first place!
“Takashi.”
Nagayan lifted his gaze and found Tuti looking at him questioningly, worry clearly displaying on his face.
“Two weeks until we see each other again, right?”
Tuti seemed startled at the sudden question but answered with a nod.
“That´s not so long but it bothers me anyway.”
“I´m sorry, Takashi, but your pout won´t solve the problem this time.”
Tuti took a step towards Nagayan and he could nearly feel Tuti´s warm breath as he spoke:
“Although I wish it would.”
Tuti was so near that he could smell the typical mixture of aftershave and sweat at the end of a hot summer day. Nagayan suddenly felt the urge to step in closer, he wanted to remember Tuti´s scent as clearly as possible. Their arms touched lightly as he did so and he could feel goosebumps raising where their skin had met. He had to breath in deeply and noticed that at the same time Tuti had held his breath. They stood like this for a while, Nagayan could feel Tuti breathing against his forehead and he noticed that he hadn´t felt this comfortable in a long time. He closed his eyes and relaxed. Tuti didn´t even move as Nagayan´s chin found his way onto his shoulder. Tuti´s mouth nearly touched Nagayan´s ear and his voice was a whisper as he spoke:
“You have to catch the last train.”
Nagayan didn´t move an inch as he whined against Tuti´s shoulder:
“Don´t wanna!”
Tuti smiled and shifted carefully so that his lips nearly touched Nagayan´s forehead.
“Go and do your job. You love your job or have you forgotten?”
Nagayan lifted his head and looked at Tuti´s smiling face.
“Yeah, I love my job. And I´m happy that you are a part of it again.”
“Hey don´t compare me with your job! I should have a more special place in your life.”
It was meant as a joke but Nagayan felt the need to make an earnest reply:
“You know how special your place in my life is.”
As if out of their own will Nagayan´s hands found their way onto Tuti´s chest. He could feel the warmth of Tuti´s body through the dark material as his fingertips moved slowly to follow the imprint´s pattern. He could draw the letters blindly for he himself designed them. It was like a gift for Nagayan when Tuti was wearing some of his designed clothes, like a sign to whom Tuti belonged. Almost like wearing someone´s ring. Nagayan had to smile at this thought. Yes, his place in Tuti´s life was just as special as Tuti´s place in his life. He could feel Tuti´s lips briefly touching the skin of his forehead before he ended their moment of closenes:
“Go catch your train. I´ll call you tomorrow, as soon as I´m awake, I promise.”
Tuti knew him too well, there was no chance for pouting and whining after those words.
Nagayan flung his arms around Tuti´s waist and squeezed him lightly. He could feel Tuti´s hand reaching for the back of his neck to ruffle the strands of soft hair. For bypassers it may have looked like a hug between friends like it was customary in countries like Spain but for them it meant a hundred times more. That was the kind of relationship they shared for nearly four years already: the surface of close friendship and the deep feelings hidden underneath it. And it were these moments of closeness when the surface faded, which they both treasured the most. They still had a long way to go and Nagayan was planning to enjoy every bit of it. After all they grew closer with every step they took together.
He saw Tuti still standing on the same spot as he turned around and waved a last time before he entered the subway station. He would remember Tuti´s smile on his way home. And tomorrow he would remember Tuti´s sleepy morning-voice. This was going to become a good summer for them.
