We finished track on Saturday when the meet ended, but our duties didn't end until we got home at about 12:30 AM Monday. The track trip overall went well, but there was a rather sad and unfourtunate start to the trip and eight of our athletes were not able to come to Baku with us. There are any number of reasons for this, but what it came down to is that all our local kids were not allowed to leave. It was a huge loss for them and a heartbreaking moment for all of us.
The meet was a success, and we had several new school records as well as many students who placed in the top 3 and many others who made it to the finals in their events.
Our adult relay team got 3rd place again. We have medaled two years in a row. We might have been able to get second, but a sloppy hand-off led to us dropping the baton. We still managed to just barely get third as I crossed the finish line mere inches from the next closest team. It was all very exciting.
This is the third school athetics trip to Baku for me and I am kindof over it. It is especially exhausting since each trip has to include an extra day so that out team can fly home on Sunday making the round trip ticket price $300 instead of $800 if we flew home on Saturday. All that out of country supervising is tiring. Luckily our kids are very well behaved and I don't have any funny stories about antics this trip. Overall we took 14 athletes and 4 coaches and some families traveled with us to see their kids perform, but didn't chaperone. We had ages 9-18 with us. If all our kids had come we'd have had 22 and been 2/3rds elementary. It was about half and half secondary and elementary.
Now that we are back we have a new challenge. Talent show. We found out today that our staff number is closing the show. It is really just 3 of us and we are going to be rehearsing this evening so that we can be prepared. We all were coaches on the track trip.
We were going to do a little mermaid duet, with guitar accompaniment but ran out of time to get the guitar piece arranged, so we are just going to do a regular song we already know. And it is tomorrow after school.
We have Wednesday off of school for Constitution day. Next week is three days of workshops and field trips with the kids. I'm doing wool processing, so I should probably do some trial experiments to see how long stuff will take. I doubt local wool is different from American wool, so it will likely be just fine. I still need to see if I can get more raw wool for the classes. Hooray for using SCA acquired knowledge to teach kids.
This is the part of the year that whizzes by with a bunch of activities. Saturday our school is hosting a fun-run. I won't be doing the run, but I will help with the registration.
The end of the year is hard. We have Mastery Learning at QSI. This means that kids can turn in anything for credit until they finish their units. If they don't get an A or B they have not achieved mastery and won't get credit for the unit. They need 10 units per class, per year. So some kids are finished with all units and others have a bunch to make up. I am pretty organized, so I know what kids need to do to complete units, and I have already given out the missing work packets. If they don't complete old work by May 24 they get D's and no credit. They have to have all work in by the 9th and that is when grades are due. So if they wait until then, and I don't have time to correct it, they get no credits. For my 13 YO classes they need to pass seven units to move to Secondary 1. For Seconary 1-4 they have to earn enough credits to move up to the next class. Some kids are secondary 1 for a couple years until they earn the credits they need to be Sec 2. Anyway, my highschool kids are all fine, and some of the 13s need to do a lot of catching up. I pretty much know who will and who won't.
