brushing up on the classics

Now that HP is done with, I'm reading classic books I never got a chance to read in school. I've started with 'Uncle Tom's Cabin' and I really like it so far. I mean, it's almost as hard to put down as Deathy Hallows was (mostly because I had a serious need to find out what happened to the Malfoys and to Snape). It might have something to do with it being so important historically, but actually it's just a good book all in itself - even if it hadn't launched the Civil War.

I've got a lot of classics to read actually. Mostly because my entire schooling was unfortunately revolved around one book: To Kill a Mockingbird. First time I read it was for summer reading in fourth grade. Finished it in a month because it was really good (and it is) and I liked it enough not to get distracted by other books or comics. I finished a book report on it, read it to the class, and then got stared at for not choosing something like 'Homeward Bound' or 'Charlotte's Web'. XD;

Fifth grade rolled around, and the book was assigned to us as a class. Whee. I was happy since I'd already read it. But then the chapter tests started and I had to read it all over again just to know what would be on the test. I went to a different school for sixth grade. Guess what? To Kill a Mockingbird again. I liked the class assignments for sixth grade though, because one assignment was to draw a scene from the book. I drew Arthur's hand putting his little treasures in the tree's knothole. I still have that picture and of course now it looks all kinds of wrong.

Seventh grade, different school, same damn book. Ninth grade, tenth grade, AND eleventh grade (same school! wtf?), lather, rinse, repeat. By high school I was approaching the teacher, worn copy of TKaM in hand, and begging to be allowed a different book since I already re-read the damn thing several times. And each time, she or he smiled at me and said "Well then you'll be very good on the tests and discussions, won't you!"

And then I would get detention for lunging over the desk and attempting to strangle them.

. . . . So yeah, now that I'm free of education, I'll be happily reading everything else EXCEPT To Kill a Mockingbird. Until I become a teacher and have to assign it to my own class. *weeps*
