Count the Mesquito Bites/Welcome to South Carolina!

Almost 2 months into my residence in downtown Columbia. I'm unpacked, in the process of decorating (sanding, painting, reupholstering old furniture, etc.) My apartment is a half wall away from being a studio, but it is quite pretty and newly renovated, in a historic building, only 2 blocks from the state capitol building. I grew up in a very rural area, went to school in isolated suburbia, and now I'm trying my hand at city life. Mind you, Columbia is a small southern city, but you wouldn't know how small it is around here. About a third the size of Charlotte, but just as rich (or richer) in art museums.

And what the heck am I gonna do without a car? In Charlotte, the answer is bum rides off friends, or walk fifteen minutes to the bus stop which (oh boy) takes me down N. Tryon. Robbery waiting to happen. In Columbia, I am near the bus hub, which has less routes than Charlotte, but it goes to malls, target, thrift stores, etc. Plus, I've got legs, and they can get me places around here. Within fifteen minutes walk or less, there's lots of restaurants, local coffee shop, grocery store, art museum, my work, fabric store that smells like rat poison (ewwww), furniture stores, University of South Carolina, more stores, a flying saucer and a monterrey's.

Bicycle!!!!

I have a new bicycle, her name is Sophie and she's a lavender road bike that fits me just right. Yeah, lavender sounds weird, but she looks good. So, now the radius of things I can get to with my own two feet grows to include five points, a cool area that has lots of stores, earth fare, two bicycle shops, food lion, restaurants, etc.

So, I'm just loving living in the city, but there is something missing - my peoples!!! I haven't met many people here outside of work that are my own age. At least there are lots of people to have little conversations with at work. Most of the young folks at work live at least a thirty minute drive away, anyway. I have met a couple of cute guys my age at the cycle shops.

Party!
This weekend, John, Scott and Chris came down to Columbia for some environmental stuff. So, I got to see them, go to a little pool party on Saturday and meet a couple of girls that live here. So, not a bad start, cept all i really know about them is where one of them works and where is going to live next semester. Maybe ask John....

Speaking of, it was the first time I had seen John since the breakup. It went.... ok, I guess. There's wasn't yelling, I did a lot of talking. I am about 80-90 percent sure I'm not attracted to him anymore. There was one point where I just had to hug him, but it was like an almost-crying hug, not sexy. I do still care about him, in the way that you don't want to see someone unhappy. Just that. I told him I didn't care anymore, but realize now that I don't care if he's unhappy because he was stupid and broke up with me and can't handle seeing me again. That's what I don't care about. Anger. Just a little bit, you can't go through a breakup without some anger.

Mesquitos!!!!
WTF? They are everywhere. I have yet to see one in my apartment, I am actually glad these windows don't open. I was in my officle (somewhere between an office and a cubicle), and one was flying around there. Get out!!! You can't be an architect!!! Smoosh! EWWWWWW! Who knows whose blood that was? Everyone in the office? Mine? Your mama's? I was so bored at work today, I counted my mesquito bites on my right leg. FIFTY-FIVE!!! That's right, one leg, 55 bites. Those bitches!

Anybody know of an organic/natural mesquito repellent?
