so i keep pestering everyone about
this. a video from the 1989 plebiscito en Chile... la campaña del NO.
basically what this little skit and melody brings back for me is sitting in the basement at la Católica, watching on a little TV all of this political propaganda from back in the day. Carlos teaching us all about the elections, Pinochet, dictatorship and desaparecidos. this little song "...la alegría ya viene" is especially catchy. can't you just see all the Chilean stars lined up one by one, "We Are the World"-style, singing? "no, no, no, no, no!!" most of the cast members of "Brujas..."
what do you mean you don't know what "Brujas" is?? ahh. that little telenovela that had the entire country engrossed in it. otoño/invierno 2005 (that's March-July).
the point is, basically, that Chile is still theoretically waiting for la alegría. but i love this propaganda for what it stood for: a country united against a horrible dictator. murderer. being supported on the D-L by the United States government. thinking about this makes me want to watch "Machuca." "¡¡Pedro Machuca!!
in other news, things are quiet and low key here... today marks the beginning of fall break which means essentially nothing to me. might head down to Immokalee for a bit. might go to a Halloween party with Mafe tomorrow. a protest. sleep in. kill time until work on Wednesday.
i watched "Garden State" finally the other day which was great fun. it has what just might be the best soundtrack in any movie i've seen, though it was weird to actually see all the songs that i have come to know so well in their movie context.
yesterday was Randy's birthday, so naturally i had to do something at midnight (right in the middle of "Garden State," mind you). earlier that night i picked up two slices of key lime cheesecake and some candles from Publix. of course this was not before i called Matt from the store and had to ask him if Randy even liked cheesecake. damn picky eaters...
around midnight i took the two slices over to Gamma, put 5 candles in them--2 in one and 3 in the other--lit them and waited until my cell phone told me it was midnight to knock on the door. i succeeded in surprising him which was the intended result. we sat and ate cheesecake... i gave him the sign-thing from Argentina that i'd commissioned back in July which he was stoked on. and that was that. i returned home to watch the rest of my movie and fall into a contented sleep. as much as i'm uncomfortable when people do things like that for me, i love catching people off guard in a good way.
yesterday i hung out with Matt... smoked a bit... drank a Bud Light... watched Grey's Anatomy and bore witness to the most ridiculous shampoo commercial ever made.
today i almost lost the cat when i was taking him back from my room to Randy's apartment. i had him in the car and was about to get in when he jumped out. the only part of him i was fast enough to grab was his tail, which i held on to for dear life until i could get a hand on his little body. needless to say it was terrifying, and i held him extra tight when it came time to carry him inside again. i also tried this recipe i found online for pumpkin cookies, but they came out dreadfully. ugh.
and i'm bored. so here.
