Wow.
Day number Yesterday. Rating: AWESOME.
Me and Cait met Coelasquid, aka Kelly, at 11 at Union Station. After being constantly cowed/awed by her internet presence (her being an enormous influence on my art and all) it was a shock to meet the biker-booted woman herself.....she was a bit shorter than i imagined.
We picked a direction at random with the intention of buying something hot to drink. there i was, bundled up in a million layers of cloth and with my hat jammed down to my ears - kelly was sauntering around in a suede jacket and a t-shirt. she's from northern manitoba, where it's often 60 degrees below, and her nonchalance about the fact we were wading through easily a foot of snow was amazing to this antipodean.
we wandered down Bathurst for a long while, gossiping about anything and everything - art, drinking, characters, comics, family, characters, vikings, characters - and after many 'not this stop but the next's we reached destination number three on our All Canada Comicstore tour - Beguiling. the home of the arty, the farty, and the just plain weird....oh, and some marvel too. Kelly splurged on some punisher, i resisted buying half the store, and forked out for a present for Ross. The shop feels a lot like work at home - very much a place to be, not just to buy, that stocks most of the odd or rare comics as well as the usual fare. and it was delightfully cosy after the cold.
We bought bubbletea in spadina and schmoozed around the aquarium again - i swear, they recognise me in there now - making faces at our favourite red betta and cooing at the salamanders. the ease at which reptiles are available here is astounding - and they're cute as heck, too. i go in there and chum with the bearded dragon to feel at home.
we found our way next to Destination Four on the ACCT - another comic store, where i bought myself a Cassidy Action figure (he came with a pint glass of fake blood) and we giggled over some old Colossus comic covers. As the obligatory gay russian muscleman, Colossus makes for some amusing reading. but dear me, some of those covers.... "WHUT R MANATOMIES YUS?"
The snow, the snow! piled in banks three feet high! i leapt in every one i could find, and because our lucky snowfall was packing snow....snowfight. I got Cait a killer in the boob, and then kelly jumped on me and stuffed me in a drift. she's unstoppable in a snowfight - i put it down to her canadian blood. Kat can beat me as well, and i put that down ti my tendency to squeal and surrender when someone stuffs snow down my neck.
We fed on Roti - delicious at under four dollars - and went back up queen street. The funky perfume store waylaid us yet again, mainly because it was pumping out 'wonderful time' by tiny tim, causing me to dance in an embarrassing fashion in public while examining a card that read 'Women - can't live with them, can't get them to dress up in a nazi uniform and beat you with a warm squash." i love this place.
Found a store advertising Australian Boots, unsurprisingly painted orange and brown, where they sold rossi boots for a much bigger margin. after a lot of meandering and jumping in drifts we found Kensington Markets, where i bought a present for Leilah, a present for Sheldon, and a present for Ross. With the present for Hazel i bought today, my gift shopping is dramatically reduced.
by this time it was dark, and our feet hurt, so we parked ourselves in a mall and spent a happy hour filling a sketchbook with atrocious sketches, doodles and collaborations - most of which lacked sufficient clothing and/or sanity.
by the time we hugged kelly goodbye and got home i was so tired i was developing a second knee around the ankle.
much love,
pixie
