[NOTE: In the graphic novel, Delirium's speech bubbles are drawn in misaligned lettering on a changing gradient background. To match that effect in RP, Delirium will be speaking to people in gradient text.]

First Person Sample

[There's some heavy breathing on this mysterious newcomer's end. A few ruffling sounds later, a voice rings through. You might have heard it before, or maybe you haven't. If you know this voice, like how you know what time you'll wake up tomorrow morning, then you've met her, in one way or another.]

Um, so. So I was wondering -- and I do that a lot very much -- that this might not be where I used to be. I think. I can't feel right. Or I don't feel right. Right?

[She whimpers a bit.]

Where's my doggie? I know he was here, because we're always together now, and now...Now he's not here. I want him here. Doggie...are you under this rock? Doggie? Bee...Ayy...Arr..um, Enn...

[Her voice escalates. She sounds desperate.]

I want to feel right again. This isn't right. I don't think this was where I was and my doggie isn't here and I WANT MY DOGGIE!I WANT MY SISTER TOO! AND MY BROTHER! I WANT THEM NOW!

[Silence passes her by, and all of a sudden, there's a misplaced giggle on her end, as if her outburst was nothing short of temporary.]

I saw a man with his underwear on the outside!

The sun wasn't as bright today as it normally was, she mused. Maybe it was taking a break? Or it was running out of those energy-packs people bought in stores, shaped like sausages, except they tasted bland and weird. Delirium walked by a park and sat on a bench and laid down on the pavement. Barnabas followed unconditionally, remembering to speak only when there was no-one to notice him. He became a master of switching his gaze back and forth from her and the way in front of him. If he wasn't careful, they'd get separated again, and the last time that happened, Delirium got herself stranded in the middle of a college riot, wondering why glass bottles exploded. It was a mess, of course, but Barnabas was used to it. Sometimes, he wasn't, though.

The skies rumbled and Delirium blinked at the gray backdrop above her. She didn't move. Her right hand was placed gently on top of her canine companion's back, his silence somehow deafening to her ears. She wasn't that used to him not telling her things like "How many times do I have to tell you, candlewax is not edible!"

Something made a clattering sound, and she turned her head to see a man walking past her, dropping a coin to her side. She stared at it for a good while, before taking it and observing it underneath the fading daylight. Delirium spun it around, bit it, put it on the bridge of her nose, made it spin on the ground, and then finally she spoke about it, because it was shining and it was interesting and she knew that she knew what it was.

"I see little kids with blue jumpers and caps on put this inside those slot machines and when they pull the lever, it goes WHOOOSHING!
"

Barnabas shrugged. "It's a quarter. You get that a lot when we stay here."

Delirium blinked and played with the quarter some more. She was fascinated with the way it seemed to sparkle on the pavement. It was money, and it was small, and it made her feel good to get it. She wasn't sure why, though. And Delirium actually had a feeling she was supposed to be insulted by it, not happy that they gave it to her like that.

"How many of these do you need to get a bajillion moneys? I think you need a bajillion too, because that's a whole lot and I think people throw this away. That's why he gave it to me.
"

Her friend only made a sound, that she was also sure dogs could only make (because she honestly gave that sound her best try, and it came out as an infected cough), and his tongue went darting out of his mouth.

"Maybe. Quarters are pretty useless nowadays. I don't think it can buy you a piece of candy, even."

The girl with the red and green and blue and violet hair leaned back on her arms and started to ignore the quarter, opting to kick her legs back and forth as she turned her attention to a store with the words SALE! 45% OFF ON ALL ELECTRONIC ITEMS! plastered to its walls.

"I don't know. If it's small and it's money, and people still have it...I mean, it's like having a lot of little pebbles and making a big huge gigantic rock with it. You know?
"

There were many times in Barnabas' stay with his previous master's sister that he had nothing to say to the things she said in turn. That moment was probably one of them, so Barnabas barked softly in agreement or disagreement -- who knew, really -- and dozed back off into silence. Once in a while, he would watch her as she stood and started dancing, and more quarters were thrown her way. Some she caught, some she ignored again, but ultimately, Delirium went back to sitting down and the moment she did, a drop of water fell on her cheek.

Barnabas started to stand and tugged at her old leather sleeve gently. "We should get going, now."

Delirium did not budge, however. She stared up again at the sky and waited for it to fall completely. She was aware of his insistent tugging, and like telling her not to eat wax, he did that a lot too, so she wasn't angry with him or anything. The second drop fell on her shoulder, and the third one on her arm. The fourth and fifth, she couldn't tell if it fell at the same time, or one came to her nose before the other, and pretty soon it rained hard on her body, soaking her from head to toe. She closed her eyes and opened her mouth and finally started walking. Barnabas was never too far behind.

"See? See! Hee, I was right, wasn't I? I think I was!
" Delirium laughed. Barnabas shot her a glance and noticed for the first time since they left their spot on the pavement that Delirium was holding something to her jacket, like a mother holding a baby.

"I think you missed me on that point, dear. What are you talking about, again? What are you holding?"

She showed him what inhabited the lump on her clothing, and all the quarters she was able to collect, the quarters that were given to her as a seemingly useless piece of money, were safely cradled and tucked away from the rain (though that effort in itself was a futile one). They passed by a woman with clothes that looked like they were bitten by insects in their state of better condition, and she lived inside a shopping cart that made Delirium giggle a bit. Before the two left her, Delirium put all of her quarters inside her worn-out, moth-bitten hat, and she and Barnabas went on their way. The rain showed no signs of stopping.

"I was right, because those quartzers -- um, quarters -- I gave them to her. She's going to use them and because I got a lot, she'll use them well.
" She skipped on puddles and Barnabas stayed silent as she continued to speak.

"Rain is really small too. But um. It's like small moneys. The rain is small but it makes me wet and it makes you wet, and we're both wet like the ground.
"

Barnabas could not fully understand what Delirium was talking about, and he was used to that as well, but somehow, he couldn't find it in himself to disagree with her. He couldn't find it in himself to agree, either. But it was how Delirium thought and it might be true, and only time will really tell if Delirium would be able to convince Barnabas that the rain was drenching when you collected enough of it.
