So tonight...

...I went to see a famous author (Jackson Katz) with Rachael at TWU, in a lecture hall that normally seats around 80 students. I knew to expect more than 100, and possibly close to 150. I am an introvert. I was nervous. I was antsy and fidgety. I was very far from my comfort zone.

What would this be like? I know my own feminism. I know my own ( Read more... )

" It's really hard to be a man, believe the things I do, hear a co-worker say something sexist or infer an abusive act (even in jest), and think about this. It scares me to think about being confrontational with the immense number of good ole boys who work in my office."

See, I guess I luck out in that regard. I make my point heard, and in one instance where it persisted, I used the classic "hostile work environment" clause on getting some HR involvement.

I don't see as much of it now working for Borders books, because we actually have a large percentage of women in all levels, all the way to the VP level. We also score well on GLBT equality ratings.

Still, eh.

I was watching Quantum of Solace tonight, and found myself completely questioning Bond's motivation for bedding a fellow agent for no reason other than she was a redhead. Even in the "gentlemen hero" of Bond, there's a degree of that which makes no sense in intergender behaviour.

Thank you for sharing your experience on that lecture. Makes me wish I could get out and see more of this.

I'm really glad to hear that you had a positive experience in this regard, Dave.

I work for an elevator company, so my co-workers are either engineers (male-dominated), former elevator techs who work on construction sites (extremely male-dominated), or perform some accounting/administrative duties (female-dominated).

Because the unions drive our interactions at work and engineers are so integral to the success of the company, most people just shrug their shoulders and accept it for what it is. I'm not sure if HR would take action, primarily because the work environment is so dense with these personalities that nobody would speak up.

I have to admit that this sort of event is a rarity for me, but nevertheless I'm glad I went.

Have you seen any James Bond before? He's character has sex with any female that crosses his path, except Moneypenny. Its amazing watching Bond, cause its pretty aweful the sexual liberties he takes with women, I was watching Thunderball on BBC not that long ago, it was almost shocking, he just takes what he wants with no regard to how any of the women feel. I haven't seen Quantum of Solace yet, Daniel Craig isn't my ideal Bond, (now is that me being sexist? he doesnt fit the Bond character for me?) I will rent it eventually.

See, for the most part, the modern interpretation of Bond is a bit more respectful, the character has a bit more logic, but that one character moment had me stumped. I guess, when I consider the outcome of that female character, it somewhat demonstrates a repurcussive element for Bond, as it does have an element of moral guilt that negativeyl impacts Bond directly.

Still....
