I have two real goals for this school year which are not at all school-related, other than that one of them may be accomplished with aid from an MSU textbook used in some sort of textile design/home ec class in the 60's (whose owners' names and addresses in Mason Hall are still penciled in on the inside front cover).
1. Learn to cook
2. Learn to sew
I mean, I can manage to do very basic things with either of those- I make good scrambled eggs and mac n' cheese from a box, and I've made drawstring bags, my wedding garter, and a few pillow cases/covers with the sewing machine Jess's mom gave me, but I want to really learn to do both of them. Especially the sewing- Gramma has offered me her in-desk sewing machine, as she has outgrown it after decades of use, and I would love to have it- but without the space for it or the knowledge to use it, I can't possibly tell her I'll take it. Perhaps I could get her to hold onto it for me, as a reward for when I've actually learned...I don't know. I don't know if my other two crafty cousins sew at all- I don't think so, though. Which means step 2 for Gramma's sewing machine is off to the wilderness of strangers...and I'd much rather it be in the family. So little of that happens these days, you know? For starters, our stuff isn't made to be that durable anymore, and for another, we're so quick to toss something and move on with a whim that it's unlikely anything my generation owns will see the next one's hands.
Any help would be appreciated- I just don't know where to start. Thinking maybe a few Saturdays with Gramma or evenings here and there with anyone else I could talk into tutoring me. Advice of good books or sites or patterns to learn on would be absolutely fantastic- I've got my eye on a cute apron for the kitchen, for example. That shouldn't be too hard, should it?
