Ok, third time typing this will be the charm. i'm going to be the devil's advocate.
Can you afford to move out there with no job? Do you have enough savings to pay rent (even rent with roommates) for 3-6 months if you're looking for a job? Not to mention how much it costs to move out there in the first place. Are you willing to wait until you secure a job to move out there? What about your boyfriend and friends? Is he going to come with you? Are you going to have any sort of social network there, or are you going to end up looking for work all day and drinking alone all night until you run out of money and come home? Do you really want to live with college kids again?
Basically, the money, the job, and the social stuff all make me want to scream "don't go!", but you are only young once, and CA is supposed to be awesome. So only you can decide if the move is right. And as far as money stuff goes, I'm more than willing to help you figure out about how much it would cost to move and live out there, so you'd know what sort of savings you'd need to avoid going in to debt for too long.
As far as moving stuff, I was thinking that since the move would be temporary, I'd only pack what I can fit in my car, and then get anything else I need out there… my car can fit a lot, surprisingly. If I decide I want to stay, then I'll fly back and get my stuff.
I don't really want to live with college kids, which is why my friend "Peaches" and I are currently looking at places… he is already out there, going to UCSD for grad school. There are a few places he's looking at around where he lives now, and a lot of them include utilities.
As far as the job thing goes, I figure I'll waitress or something until I find something better… which is exactly what I'm doing now, I'd just get more sun. :-)
A lot of design places are hesitant to hire out of state people, either because of relocation costs, or the amount of time it would take to finalize relocating, or simply because it's a pain to interview someone via phone.
The social thing doesn't really scare me. My work schedule takes up so much of my time that the only people I ever really see enough anymore are Foster and Kerri… and Kerri is talking about moving to Buffalo. As for everyone else… Peter is moving to Colorado, Sunil is in San Antonio, Jon Delgado is in Seattle, Christina is in Jackson, and let's face it, every other RIT friend I have now is NOT going to stay here.
Foster and I discussed this, and he wants me to be happy. Basically, I'm sick of doing things because of other people. I went to RIT because my mom wanted me to (it was the only school I applied to or even looked at), I moved to NC because of Eric, and I moved back here because of Foster (really, I think everyone knows that by now). I just really feel like it's my turn to do something for myself. He graduates at the end of winter, and as much as I'd love to stick around for him, he's probably just going to get a full time job at Thermo in Penfield anyway.
I've always been pretty ok at managing my money, even though I never seem to have any… but I don't have any debt, I don't even have a credit card, and I've never paid rent late.
