apples and oranges

First, remember the great manga giveaway? I'm packing up the claimed books this weekend and will probably remember to ship them next week. In the wake of all the recent bingeing and purging of books on your shelves, I wanted to give everyone a chance to review their selection before I send you a book you'll feel bad about having to throw away. So click the link below, do a search on "claimed" (no quotes), and look for your initial. Let me know if you want to unclaim...or claim more!

I ordered my iMac on Sunday, received it on Wednesday, and called to make a complaint about the keyboard today.

Here was my complaint: I didn't realize when I placed the order that the keyboard with the numeric pad was the same price as the keyboard without. The order defaults to the keyboard without. I probably wouldn't have made the mistake if Apple hadn't presented information inconsistently on their order configuration page. All other options are presented in increasing order of price, but the keyboards are presented as
* default keyboard
* wireless keyboard (add $30)
* keyboard with numeric keypad
Not bothering to read through the list of options was my error, not Apple's. But this was going to gnaw at me, so I decided it was worth 5 minutes to email Apple to let them know that this inconsistency caused a small problem. Except they don't appear to have a customer service email, so I had to call. I explained my situation and asked that they pass on my concern to the web programmers, but was instead directed to customer sales...where I explained to the nice lady who took my call that I loved my iMac and I had no complaints and I just wanted to let Apple know that I would have preferred a numeric keypad and would have selected one if the list had been ordered differently and could she let the web folks know.

You guessed it: they're shipping me a keyboard w/ keypad. "Can I mail the one I originally received back to Apple?" "No need to bother." I love you, Apple customer service.

I have budgeter's remorse about the iMac, but no buyer's remorse. It was absolutely the right decision to make. Not only does bootcamp work like a dream, but if something goes wrong with my Powerbook, I don't have to despair over losing access to Mac-specific apps. I'm only sorry that my Windows XP license won't permit me to set up a bootcamp partition on the Powerbook as well. And that the behemoth that is my HP Pavilion is now cluttering up a card table. I plan to erase all sensitive data from the drive, but I still haven't decided if there's anything I want to save. If there isn't...well, that could help me get rid of the old Mac Performa as well. Seriously, I'm so concerned about decluttering my apartment, so what's the benefit in being a digital packrat?
