Chap-15 Words that we'd spoken with those unforgettable eyes,
Even our pain could be easily understood that way,
I can hear your gentleness,
Because I believe in what your eyes tell me,
That single tear falls on the palm of your hand,
Washing everything away,
As a new dawn breaks,
The first light of the day.
Aiba let the last words float through the air, looking out the window as he watched the sun starting to rise.
Since it was still snowing out, the sun was covered mostly by clouds, but Aiba could still see the small rays of light that managed to shine through that thick gray blanket.
It was now around 7:00 a.m. and despite only napping for a few minutes here and there during the night, Aiba didn't feel tired at all (though he was sure it had more to do with having a worried parent's adrenaline running through him rather than actual awakeness itself).
During the night, a nurse would come into the room every hour or so to take Ohno's vital signs or give him his medicines. Aiba also spent the night caring for Ohno as well- wiping the sweat off Ohno and changing his clothes if they got too wet, feeding Ohno his milk at intervals so his body could get stronger, making sure his diaper was changed immediately if Ohno had wet or messed himself or just held Ohno in his arms to give the baby comfort if he started crying from being woken up by the nurse while they were doing their jobs.
To Aiba's relief, Ohno's fever had started to lower and his coughing had definitely begun to lessen until it was only a cough here and there.
When Aiba changed Ohno's diaper around 4:00 a.m, Ohno was still having diarrhea. But when he asked the nurse about this, she assured him that it was normal and he would be fine as long as he took in a lot of liquids and nutrients into his body.
As Aiba stood up and stretched (his body felt so stiff) Ohno started squirming in bed for a while before slowly opening his eyes and yawning.
Aiba immediately sat back down and leaned closer to him, placing a hand on Ohno's forehead (he had taken off the cooling pad about an hour ago). "Good morning, Satoshi." Aiba greeted him gently, sighing in relief as Ohno's forehead felt much less warmer than it had last night.
Ohno gave out another yawn before slowly turning to look at Aiba. "...mama..." Ohno croaked, his throat dry.
Aiba immediately poured a tiny cup of water before bringing it to Ohno. "Here, Satoshi. Open your mouth- this will help your throat." Aiba instructed him gently, carefully bringing Satoshi up and letting the baby take tiny sips of water. After he finished, Aiba wiped his mouth and laid him back down. "Better?"
Ohno nodded. "Bedder." His face was still flushed and his throat was a little itchy despite the drink, but his head didn't hurt anymore and he wasn't feeling dizzy.
Aiba smiled as he gave the baby a kiss on the forehead. "Mama's right here." Aiba told him gently, putting his arm around the baby's body. "Does your head still hurt?"
Ohno blinked before he opened his mouth to reply. "Head and tummy no hurt anymow. No fweel cold too. But twoat is itchy." Ohno pointed to his throat.
Aiba smiled as he snuggled closer to Ohno. "I'm relieved your getting better. I wouldn't know what to do with myself if you had gotten worst." He said the last sentence quietly to himself.
Ohno blinked as he looked around the hospital room, really noticing it for the first time since he had arrived. "Whew are we?" He asked, looking back to Aiba.
"We're in the hospital, Satoshi. Mama decided to bring you here so the nice doctors and nurses could help mama make you feel better. And I guessed it worked since you look better much already." Aiba explained to the baby gently.
Ohno nodded as he started to look more awake now as he looked around the room. "Snow!" He pointed out to the window. Aiba turned and also noticed that it had started to lightly snow.
"Yup. But we can't play in it since you're still sick. Let's just stay indoors today and stay nice and cozy together." Aiba said, looking down as Ohno nodded to that and started to notice the IV attached to his leg.
"Weg." Ohno spoke, moving the blanket a bit so he could see his leg that had a needle in it.
"Yes. This is to help you get more fluids and medicine in your body to help you get better. Does it hurt?" Aiba asked, wanting to make sure that Ohno wasn't suffering from any discomfort from the IV.
Ohno shook his head, his eyes wide at the intrusion in his leg. "No huwt. I ok." Suddenly there was a rumbling from Ohno's tummy and the small baby shifted his wide eyes turning towards him.
Aiba grinned as he brought the baby in his arms, cradling him gently as he made sure the IV wasn't in the way. "I guess it's time for someone's breakfast. Let's see if I can get some delivered here, hm?" Aiba reached for the call button and spoke to the nurse, informing her that Ohno was awake and if they could bring in his breakfast now.
A few minutes later, one of the nurses who came in earlier to get his vital signs entered the room with a small tray that had an injection needle placed on top. "Good morning Satoshi-kun, Aiba-san. I see that Satoshi-kun here is looking much better!" The nurse greeted them cheerfully.
Ohno, still shy with strangers, cuddled closer to Aiba and slightly hid himself in the older man's arms. "Hewo..." He replied unsurely.
Aiba smiled at the baby's actions as he smoothed down Ohno's messy hair. "Good morning, nurse-san. Satoshi here says that his head and stomach doesn't feel bad anymore and his coughing has lessened, although his throat does feel a bit itchy." Aiba told her.
The nurse nodded. "Since his stomach is doing better, the doctor says it's okay for us to add a bit of honey into Satoshi-kun's milk and hopefully that'll help soothe away the itchiness. But before we can give his milk, I have to administer his medication first- it's more effective before meals." She explained, gesturing towards her shot.
Ohno looked at the tray with the needle and whimpered, quickly clutching himself closer to Aiba and hiding his face in Aiba's chest.
Aiba cooed at him as he quickly reassured the baby that the nurse won't stick the needle into him (during the night, the nurses would poke the needle into the IV port and inject the medicine into the tubing. One of the nurses said that this was one of the reasons why the IV was helpful- they wouldn't have to inject the shot into Ohno's skin multiple times).
After a few more encouragements, Ohno managed to stay still long enough (he had been fussing and kicking away at the nurse who had tried to come close to him) for the nurse to gently soothe him with her words as she injected the needle into the IV port.
"Now this medication is gonna hurt a little when I push the medicine inside, but I promise that it won't last long, okay?" The nurse warned them before she started to push the medicine into the tube.
Aiba held onto Ohno tightly, watching his face for any pain. After a few seconds, Ohno's eyes started to water as he gave out a loud cry. "OW! Mama huwts!" Ohno cried, sobbing into Aiba's chest as his leg began to feel like it was gonna explode.
Aiba glanced at the nurse as she took the empty needle away and gave him an 'it's okay, this is normal' look before beginning to comfort Ohno as the baby started to cry louder.
"Shh...it's okay Satoshi. It won't last long- see? It's feeling better already, right?" Aiba cooed, watching as Ohno started to sniffle, his cries starting to stop as the pain indeed started to disappear.
The nurse got up with her tray with the shot and smiled at the two brightly. "Satoshi-kun is such a good and brave boy! I knew he could handle a little shot. Now I'll just put these things away and someone will come here shortly to bring Satoshi his breakfast. We can also bring you some breakfast as well if you would like, Aiba-san. Would you like a Japanese breakfast or a western breakfast- the western breakfast today is waffles with strawberries and fresh cream."
Aiba smiled as he nodded, letting Ohno blow his nose gently into a tissue. "That would be great. And the western breakfast sounds yummy- I'll have that, thank you."
The nurse bowed her head before leaving their room. Throwing away the used tissue, Aiba looked down at Ohno. "Satoshi was so brave just now- you took that shot like a man." He complimented.
Ohno's eyes and nose were still red but he grinned happily at that. "Shot owee huwt a wittle." He told Aiba, hugging himself to his chest.
Aiba and Ohno continued to chat for a little while until another person from the medical staff came to bring in their breakfasts. Ohno's breakfast was a bottle of milk with a bit of honey in it for his throat and two small bowls- one with plain yogurt while the other had cereal. Aiba's breakfast had the waffles with a side of sausage and scrambled eggs and a mug of coffee and glasses of juice and water each.
Aiba spooned some yogurt and cereal into Ohno's mouth as he also took a bite of the fluffy waffles. As Ohno was drinking from his milk, Aiba glanced at his phone and remembered that he hadn't called Jun or Nino to tell them about Ohno.
Aiba shook his head. He could do it after they were at home already.
After burping Ohno, Aiba carried the baby and brought them closer to the closed window to look outside (gently rolling Ohno's IV along with them).
They both pointed out to the different people, pets and trees that were outside. Since it was only gently snowing, there was only a little snowfall that were scattered around the grounds.
Ohno leaned closer to the window to see closer, his eyes turning into wide saucers when he realized his breath was fogging up the glass. Grabbing a tiny fistful of Aiba's shirt, Ohno pulling at it excitedly as he said, "Mama! Mama! Wook!" When he had Aiba's attention, he leaned close to the window again and blew into the glass. He giggled loudly as the glass fogged up again.
Aiba couldn't help but join the laughter- he was so relieved that Ohno was acting like his cute healthy self again. Watching the baby blow onto the glass with many short puffs, Aiba held onto the wiggling form before quickly saying, "Satoshi! Don't blow too much- we don't want you to get light-headed!" He warned. "Here, watch mama."
Ohno moved away from the glass and looked on with curiosity as Aiba leaned forward to blow on the glass so a bigger foggy circle appeared. Balancing Ohno with his left arm, Aiba quickly drew a picture of a fish on the window.
"Fishy!" Ohno exclaimed, clapping his hands as he giggled loudly. Aiba grinned as he saw how amazed the baby was at the picture.
"Do you like it?" Aiba asked, holding Ohno up with both arms so they could admire the fish together.
Ohno bobbed his head, his eyes stuck on the fishy. "Satohi wanna twy!" Aiba brought the baby closer to the window as the baby blew a smaller foggy circle next to his and pounded his fist on it. Ohno pouted when he saw that he had only created a misshapened oval.
But Aiba chuckled as he took Ohno's hand and using the baby's teeny forefinger, he reached up to place four dots above the oval. "Look, Satoshi. It's a puppy pawprint!" He pointed out. Ohno's eyes opened widely as he started bouncing in his arms.
"Yay! Doggy!" Ohno chirped happily. Stopping his bouncing, Ohno turned to hold onto Aiba shoulders as the baby pulled himself up to look him in the face. "Mama, wer fishy?"
Aiba's eyes widened as he realized that he had left the fish doll on his bed at home. He knew how much Ohno loved having his fishy with him at all times and couldn't believe how stupid he had been for leaving him there.
Biting his lip, Aiba carefully told Ohno, "Fishy is still sleeping back at home. I didn't want him to come with us because he might get sick like Satoshi if he had stayed here in the hospital. But I promise that fishy will be waiting for us when we get home." Aiba prayed that Ohno wouldn't cry for the absence of his fishy.
Ohno continued to stare at him for another minute before opening his mouth. "Ok. No want fishy to be sick too. As wong as mama here, den Satohi is happy." Ohno said, smiling happy at Aiba as he gave him a surprise kiss on the nose, giggling as he pulled away.
Aiba didn't know if it was because of how cute Ohno was at that moment (well, he was always cute of course) or if his tiredness was finally catching up with him or probably it was both, but Aiba immediately burst into tears as he held Ohno tightly to him, sobbing into the baby's back.
"Mama ok?!" Ohno asked panicked, trying to look at Aiba's face. All he could hear were Aiba's loud sobs. "Mama sad...or happy?" Ohno asked awkwardly, remembering what his papa had said about people sometimes crying happy tears.
Aiba wiped his eyes and nose on Ohno's clothes (the baby was wearing a hospital gown and Aiba was gonna change him soon anyway) before he pulled away and looked at Ohno's face. He smiled as he answered. "Mama's crying because he's happy but he's also tired. But mostly because he's really happy....and really, really super tired right now."
Ohno smiled at him, still looking at him like he had gone crazy- and maybe he had. Aiba laughed as he gave Ohno a big smooth on both cheeks, causing Ohno to laugh in high pitched chimes.
They both continued to laugh until one of the medical staff came to take their food trays away. The staff noticed Aiba's red eyes and commented on it.
"Oh, the wind is pretty strong today and it was affecting my eyes." Aiba lied, gesturing towards the window.
"But the window is closed." The staff pointed out in an amused voice.
"My eyes are just really sensitive." Was all that Aiba could reply to that.
When the staff left with trays, Aiba sighed in relief. "Well, that was embarrassing." He muttered to himself. "Uh-oh. It smells like someone needs a changing right now." Aiba sang, looking at Ohno. Ohno nodded his head and Aiba brought him to the bed to change.
Opening the diaper, Aiba made a loud whoosh sound. "I never thought there'd be a day that I would be happy to see a firm piece of poop." Aiba sighed, relieved that Ohno wasn't having diarrhea anymore. This really proved that the baby would definitely be better soon.
After changing Ohno's clothes and diaper, Aiba picked up Ohno and sat down in the chair, deciding that even if Ohno was feeling better, it was best if the baby got as much rest as possible today.
Aiba was singing the second verse of '5X10' to a sleeping Ohno before the door opened and their attending doctor came in.
"Hello, Aiba-san." The doctor greeted, smiling politely at him as he closed the curtain for some privacy. "How is Satoshi-kun here doing?" He asked, looking at the sleeping baby in his arms.
"He's doing much better now. There doesn't seem to be a fever anymore. He woke up earlier and said that his head didn't hurt. And he ate all his food so his stomach doesn't hurt neither. His coughing is almost gone, though he did say that it was a bit itchy. And when I last changed his diaper about fifteen minutes ago, he didn't have diarrhea." Aiba told the doctor, watching as the doctor nodded and jotted it down in his notes.
"That's good. Also based on his vitals, everything seems to be normal. His temperature is back to normal as well. Was he energetic earlier or was he feeling drowsy?" The doctor questioned.
"When he first woke up he was drowsy but he acted more like his normal self later on- especially when I carried him so we could both look out the window." Aiba answered.
The doctor smiled at that. "I see. That's good- it just proves my point that I think it would be best if we continued his care at your home now. Especially since his condition has indeed improved, I feel that it be best for us to prescribe him the needed medication that he should take and then Satoshi-kun here will be ready to be discharged."
Aiba sighed in relief at the good news. Everyone in the hospital were so nice and helpful, but he couldn't wait to get out of there- he really couldn't stand hospitals.
After the doctor checked on Ohno's vital signs and overall condition himself, he agreed to discharge them as soon as possible. After removing the IV from Ohno (thank goodness Ohno was sleeping during the whole process) he left the room to get the documents ready and the medications they would need to take home.
Aiba laid Ohno onto the bed and stretched his arms, happy to be leaving. He made sure to put all of their things into his bag and tided up the room as well (he knew that there was housekeeping for that, but it was only polite if he helped clean this much). Changing his shirt and putting on another hoodie, Aiba turned to also change Ohno out of the hospital gown and into his own clothes.
As Ohno slept peacefully in his puffy pink pig onesie with a hood that had pink pig ears attached and a curly tail on his bottom, the doctor came back into the room, giving Ohno an amused glance before turning back to Aiba and giving him the discharge forms to sign.
Handing the medications to Aiba and making sure he would follow the instructions correctly, the doctor checked on Ohno one last time before giving Aiba the final okay that they could leave and that they had readied a ride with one of the hospital's private cars for them to take home- it would be waiting in the lobby for them. He bowed down deeply to Aiba, which Aiba hurried to return as well, before leaving the room.
Aiba sat down on the bed and took a few deep breaths, letting himself calm down and relax as he truly realized that they were gonna go home soon. During the night, as optimistic Aiba tried to be about the situation he couldn't help but have thoughts of what if something has gone wrong? But it didn't and for that, Aiba wanted to thank God, Kamisama, Buddha....whoever from above for this good outcome.
Taking one last breath, Aiba put on his shades and raised his hood above his head. Putting on his backpack, Aiba reached down to cradle Ohno in his arms- making sure Ohno also wore a thick winter coat over the onesie to make sure the baby wouldn't get cold- and they both left the room.
Unfortunately the hospital had gotten pretty busy that morning with a lot of people walking around so Aiba made sure his disguise hid him well as he made his way to the lobby. Ohno stayed asleep during the whole walk, only waking up as they got into the car.
"Mama, wer we going?" He asked sleepily, letting out a yawn as he rubbed his eyes with his tiny fists.
"We're going home, Satoshi." Aiba answered him gently, smoothing the baby's hair back.
Ohno smiled at that. "Go home. Wanna see fishy." Ohno mumbled, falling back to sleep with a content smile on his face. Aiba gave Ohno a soft kiss on his forehead before spending the rest of the car ride looking out the window, looking forward to being at home again.
"Fishy!" Ohno shouted happily, hugging his doll to him fiercely. Aiba chuckled as he brought Ohno downstairs to the living room. When they had arrived back at the house, Aiba immediately brought Ohno to his room to get fishy- Ohno really had missed the doll dearly.
Aiba crashed into his couch, Ohno on top of him as he let out a huge moan. "I'm so happy to be back home." He said quietly, so happy that he wanted to cry tears of joy at that moment. Home sweet home.
Hearing the rumble coming from Ohno's stomach, Aiba looked at the time and realized that it was almost time for lunch. "Let's get something to eat, Satoshi!" Aiba said, standing up with the baby and going to the kitchen.
Aiba prepared Satoshi's milk as he went to get himself something to eat too. Not wanting to cook anything elaborate, Aiba settled for a cup of instant ramen and a curry bread that he had purchased from one of the hospital's vending machines before getting home. He also grabbed a rice cake for Ohno as well before taking them back to the living room.
As Aiba fed Ohno some of the rice cake, his eyes suddenly dropped on his phone that he had left on the coffee table. Making a face, Aiba knew that he needed to tell his other two members about what happened last night (he had called Sho again while they were driving home, telling him about Ohno's discharge). Aiba grimaced- maybe he shouldn't have waited this long to call them?
Sighing, Aiba placed the rice cake into Ohno's hands (keeping an eye on him in case he would try to throw it somewhere or made a mess) and dialed the number to one of what he considered was the lesser of evils.
"Satoshi was hospitalized?!" Jun yelled, making Aiba wince. Fortunately, Aiba had called Jun while the other was on his lunch break. At once, Aiba decided to just tell Jun upfront about Ohno getting sick. But he guessed it wasn't such a good idea after all. "What? Where? When? How? Why?...Why are you only telling this to me now?!" Jun demanded all in one go.
Aiba tsked as Ohno tried to stuff a large piece of rice cake in mouth, making Aiba take the cake and breaking off a small piece to give to Ohno. "Satoshi got sick last night due to a stomach flu that's been going around. We went to the hospital that I usually go to- it's safe and has a good privacy clause, no worries. We were admitted and stayed overnight but since Satoshi was getting better, we were discharged and came home around lunchtime. We think that Satoshi must have just gotta the illness by accident so no one's at fault. And I'm only telling this to you now because I was afraid of how you would react." Aiba answered all Jun's questions.
It was quiet at the other end for a few moments before Jun let out a tired sigh, "You brought Satoshi to the hospital?"
"Yes. As soon as I realized his symptoms I knew that he needed to see the doctor immediately." Aiba told him.
"That was very responsible of you." Jun commented.
"I can be more than just an idiot, you know. Especially during an emergency." Aiba reminded him defensively.
"Yeah, I know. We all know- even Nino. Although you don't show it much, when the going gets tough we know that there's some intelligence in that head of yours." Jun assured him, making Aiba smile.
"So you're not mad about me not telling you about Satoshi last night?" Aiba asked.
"Oh, I'm still mad about that." Jun told him quickly. "Because I know you probably told that boyfriend of yours already. But I'm assuming that you haven't told Nino yet either?"
Aiba grimaced. "Not yet."
Jun scoffed. "Well, I'm not gonna help you with that. Good luck."
Aiba groaned. "Thanks a lot."
"So Satoshi is doing better now? What are you two doing right now?" Jun questioned.
Feeding Ohno his milk, Aiba answered. "We're at home in the living room watching some show while having lunch."
"Let me speak to Satoshi." Jun urged.
Aiba put down the phone and turned to Ohno whose attention was solely on the TV. "Satoshi? Jun wants to talk to you." Ohno turned back to him as Aiba took out the bottle from his mouth before holding the phone up to the baby's ear.
"Hi JuJu!" Ohno listened wide-eyed at whatever Jun was saying. "I ok! No fweel bad anymow!" Ohno chirped. Listening more into the phone, Ohno said. "I dwink milk and eat cake. Me and mama watch game on TV."
"We're watching VS Arashi right now." Aiba spoke up, knowing that Jun would hear him in the background. "And I fed him a rice cake- not an actual cake." He added, knowing that Jun would misunderstand and scold him for that.
"Yup. VS Arahi. It weally fun. Wanna pway da cwiff." Ohno told Jun excitedly. Ohno continued talking to Jun for a few more minutes as Aiba slurped his slightly soggy noodles. "Mama, hew!" Aiba smiled at Ohno as he took away the phone and put the bottle back in Ohno's mouth.
"He sounds much better." Jun told him, sounding relieved.
"He is, but he still needs to take it easy for today." Aiba told him, slurping more noodles into his mouth.
"Well, I gotta go since my break is over and I'll let you continue eating. But if anything happens to Satoshi again, make sure you call me immediately- no excuses. Bye, Aiba-chan." At Aiba's goodbye, the other line ended.
Looking down at his phone, Aiba sighed. One down, one more to go. He guessed he might as well call Nino now as well too.
"Hello?" Nino asked distractedly, probably playing his game while on break.
"Nino, it's me!" Aiba said, trying to sound enthusiastic.
"I know, Aibaka. I have caller ID. Why do you sound nervous?" Nino asked suspiciously.
Aiba made a face at that. Of course Nino could see through him even on a phone. This time Aiba thought it would be best if he told Nino all about what happened and made sure to get every detail out so Nino wouldn't have to panic and ask any questions like Jun had.
So he proceeded to tell Nino everything that had happened and made sure to get it out that Ohno was fine and they were now resting at home. By the end of his talk, there was only silence as Aiba waited for Nino's response.
There was a click sound. "Nino? Nino?...Nino? He hung up on me?!" Aiba exclaimed in disbelief, looking at his phone and hearing the beeping sound that usually indicated that the other line had disconnected. "I don't know whether that's a good thing or a bad thing. But it's probably a bad thing, isn't it?" Aiba muttered to himself, putting down his phone.
"Mama, done!" Ohno said, holding up the empty bottle. Deciding to worry about Nino later, Aiba smiled at Ohno as he stood the baby up for his burp.
After lunch, they both cuddled on the couch, watching one of their drama shows (Aiba had all their shows recorded on his TV).
"Kaibusu-kun funny!" Ohno giggled watching as the character's arms started to stretch across the TV screen.
"Yes he is." Aiba agreed, wondering if Ohno was aware that it was his adult self that had acted as the main character.
For the rest of the day, Aiba and Ohno continued watching the member's dramas while singing along to the theme songs that would play (only a few episodes from each drama that Aiba thought Satoshi would want to watch like My Girl, Mikeneko Holmes No Suiri, a movie called Miracle Debikuro-kun No Koi to Mahou...).
…~…~…~…~…~…~…~…~…~…~…~…~…~…~…~…~…~…~…
Nino panted as he opened the door to the house.
As soon as Aiba had called him and told him about Ohno, Nino immediately hung up the phone and got off his break. All the staff and the director was surprised when Nino wanted to work straight without anymore breaks- they all thought that he probably had some place he had to go to.
Finishing up filming three hours earlier than scheduled, Nino made a rushed goodbye and immediately left for home.
"Satoshi! Aiba! Where are you guys?" Nino yelled, taking off his shoes and rushing inside. Going into the living room, Nino sighed in relief at the two figures that were lying on the couch, the television open showing an episode of Arashi Ni Shiyagare.
Aiba was asleep, giving off soft snores with Ohno laying stomach down on top of him, the baby drooling a bit as he was also asleep. Aiba had a protective grip on Ohno's back, making sure the baby wouldn't topple over with each breathe that Aiba gave.
Nino walked towards them and laid a hand on Satoshi's forehead, noting that it was at a normal temperature. Standing there as he watched the other two sleep, Nino gave out a snort. "They're not cute at all."
And if anyone walked in at that moment and commented at the man's affectionate tone as he said those words or the way he took shots of the sleeping pair with his phone, Nino would definitely deny it.
