Sam stared down at the grave stone and tried to suppress the trembling of his hands. It had been years since he visited that grave. Dean would kill if he knew it existed at all, but Gabriel encouraged Sam to return.
“I admire you, Sam. Even after what she did to you, you granted her a final rest,” the archangel said. “Not many people have enough heart to see beyond a betrayal.”
The falling rain touched his skin and Sam shuddered slightly at the sensation of the water against his wings. They still felt fresh and he had come a long way to accept them at all, but if Gabriel could learn about humanity and still see some good in Sam's race than he had to try at least. If Gabriel swore angels weren't just the hard faced soldiers Sam had met, he would believe him.
Or take up his offer to enter heaven and see for himself. Sam had been surprised he would be able to do that. As Lucifer's vessel and as the boy with the demon blood he thought he would never see heaven again. Apparently between housing an archangel and courting another Heaven would open it's gates.
“Entering is easy,” Gabriel explained. “Theoretically at least, because granting a soul salvation, who wishes but doesn't deserve it, is everything but easy.”
With a small but confident smile, Gabriel kissed Sam.
“I will wait for you at the other side.” The archangel opened his wings and vanished in the next instant.
“I can do this,” Sam murmured to himself and knelt down in front of the grave that bore the name of a person, he had loved and never truly hated. No matter how dark the hour had been, when they met.
“Hello Ruby,” he said. “It's been a while.”
When Sam appeared in Heaven with Ruby's fearful soul in his hands, Gabriel rushed to him, flashing a proud smile. Sam smiled back, the feeling of the success after he had indeed saved a soul torn apart by hell, lighting his eyes with new found grace.
