Title: Rose Coloured Glasses
Chapter 18: The Girl In the Fireplace
Fandom: Doctor Who
Summary: The moments in the Doctor’s life where his relationship with Rose reaches a turning point. One chapter per episode.
Rating: T to be safe.
Pairing: Nine/Rose, Ten/Rose

He sighed and leaned against the TARDIS console. Why, why, why?  If he’d been a few hours earlier, she’d have still been alive! Reinette would have been alive. Why hadn’t he been quicker?

That’s the Curse of the Time Lords, he heard his own voice explaining to Rose.

Oh, Rose! He’d crashed through that mirror without a second thought and left her behind for five and a half hours. And amazingly, she hadn’t been angry with him. No shouting, no accusations. Just a small “Are you alright?” He would have almost preferred her shouting. He would have taken any abuse she had thrown at him, anything but this, because goodness knew he deserved it. Leaving her like that when he’d promised not to. Stupid, stupid, stupid!

Reinette had needed him. He had no choice.

Did you really, abandoning Rose like that?

I wouldn’t have left her.

…Really? Yup, that’s really why you were so eager to jump through that sodding mirror.

He felt like screaming. He loved Reinette. No, he loved Rose! He loved them both!

“My lonely angel…”

“My Doctor…”

There were no sounds other than the ever-constant steady hum of the TARDIS’ engine, so that’s when he heard it. Quiet muffled sobs, travelling through the interior of the TARDIS. Rose was crying in her room, and he knew that it was all his fault, because this incarnation was too impulsive, too rude, too…

He closed his eyes. It was just another load of guilt to add to his personal store.

Reinette had been… was… an amazing woman, talented, intelligent, and she had understood him. Him! The Lonely God, the Oncoming Storm, and a little human being had quietly tip-toed into his mind when it was him who was supposed to be doing the investigating!

He was attracted to Reinette.

And yet, he loved Rose.

How couldn’t he? The cockney “charv” shop girl who’d kept her head in the face of the Nestene Consciousness, the silly little ape who had taught him to live again, helped him to forgive himself a little, the Bad Wolf who had looked into the Time Vortex to save him, the woman he’d given up his ninth form to save.

Attraction. Love. Reinette Rose Rose Rose Rose Rose Rose…

Again he remembered the time that she’s called him her Doctor, but, he knew that maybe that time had gone. He loved her, but he no longer knew if she felt the same. Something had changed between them, and deep inside he knew that that was his fault too, just like it was his fault that Gallifrey had burned in a sea of fire and it was his fault that he hadn’t seen Reinette one last time and it was his fault that Sarah Jane had been so crushed and it was his fault that the woman he loved was crying herself to sleep and he couldn’t even blame Mickey the Idiot.

Who’s the idiot now?

His hand rested on the letter, Reinette’s final words to him, crumpled in his pocket.

They wither and they die…

The sounds of Rose’s sobs had finally stopped now. Only the TARDIS remained.

And all I do is tear them apart, that’s all I can do, tear them apart and leave them…

He was sure that he could feel at least one of his hearts breaking. Rose, I’m sorry, I’m so sorry. But he said those words so often now that they sounded empty.

“It wasn’t your fault, you remember that, okay?”

I’m sorry, Rose, Reinette, it’s all my fault.

Alone, the Doctor began to cry. The TARDIS whirred in sympathy, then in protest as the tears began to drop onto her circuits, but he was somehow beyond caring.

He was definitely lonely.

But he wasn’t an angel.

Comments, reviews, concrit, squeeing, etc, much appreciated! ^^ Turned out a little more angsty than I would have liked, but hey, I guess that was the fic in me that wanted to be written! ^^ Others will be less angsty or whatever, I dunno.

Also...

OMG! How squee was last night's episode? But why, why? I was practically screaming at the screen at that point last night "GO ON! NOW'S YOUR CHANCE! TELL HER YOU LOVE HER!"

Unfortunately, my mum heard me. XD And I don't think she was very amused! ^^ Ah well, honestly. He's like a teenager, only with no excuse to be behaving like one, being 900 years old. But love does strange things to people. XD

Oh well, better luck next week!  The title of the next one shows much promise for us Ten/Rose shippers... hmmm, 'Love & Monsters' huh? =D XD =P

fanfic, doctor who
