Look For America
Due South (Fraser/ Kowalski, NC-17)
Author's Notes: I wrote this months ago but it's raining like the end of the world outside tonight so I finally got to finish it. My apologies to Canadians and people from Tennessee, Chicago, and anywhere else I've managed to get horribly wrong.

Interesting story. I like how you've got Fraser not quite sure of what's going on with Ray. He's unsettled by the quiet, and I like an unsettled Fraser. I think that keeps him on his toes and leads him to action. *g* Great job. Thanks.

I like an unsettled Fraser.

Ooh, me too. That boy needs his boat rocked a little more often, i feel. Like you say, it makes him act.

Thanks for you comments. Like the icon too. That's got to be one of my favourite F/K moments. *g*

Your Ray and Fraser are rare and very realistic versions. I like how dark this is, and not in a 'Oh-here-be-angst' sort of way, but in a very true sort of way. You've displayed a very keen perception of the characters; their emotions and drives, and the interaction between the boys here is just so spot-on, it's not even funny.

I like how sudden the scene in the motel room feels because you really trick us. It's so out-of-nowhere in the sense that Fraser has been agonizing over these things in his head, and he and Ray have been so emotionally separate just to collide again as they always do...and yet not sudden at all, as you look back and realize just how it's been building up in a very skillful and subtle way.

I like how this sneaks up on you. I like how slowly it moves along and still has this underlying current of immediacy that I can't exactly pinpoint. Excellent read.

Oh, I think I know what you mean. I don't really go for death and destruction angst but I'm really into complicated characters having complicated relationships. And Fraser's a bit of a challenge because he comes across as being quite simple - but of course he's complicated. Look at his history!

Thanks for your comments. I almost sound interesting. Ha ha! Cheers.

That's fantastic. I'm really into that level of angst myself, because I feel like that how things should work: there should be equal parts of sadness and joy.

And I like your point about Fraser; it's completely true. Throughout his development in the series...some people still tend to see him as this very two-dimensional character as he's portrayed on a superficial level. But there are so many glimmers throughout the show, in all these situations (I mean, just look at the whole Victoria experience) that he's a complicated guy, and that his restraint is for a reason.

I'm going to be a complete nerd here, and hearken back to Dana Scully from The X-Files (if you're familiar). My point is that, throughout the show, she had such issues with control, and reconciling her rational persona (the doctor side of her) with her emotional self. I think that any character like that, who has a career (and even rearing) ( ... )

Ooh, I like how the sex doesn't really SETTLE anything--there's hope that they'll work it out but it's not a done deal by any means.

And I particularly like Ray working out the details of the train shooting, how the angle doesn't make sense unless Fraser was on the train too. Go policeman Ray!

Yeah, I'm not big on resolution. although I think there's a resolution of sorts, it's just a little one. And I think that's how it starts, little piece by little piece.

Oh yeah! I love it when he's being all, "Something's queer..." (mostly Ray. *g*).

Thanks for the comments. :)

Wow, I really like this. There's something so sort of fresh about this story: taken by itself the plot (car breaks down, Ray and Fraser forced to share a motel bed) isn't unusual: is in fact one of the classic fic plots. And yet there's an immediacy to it, because hey, the boys don't know that's what's happening in the story. Fraser doesn't even seem to know that a big part of what's unsettled between them is UST ( ... )

Someone else said the same thing. It's interesting because it wasn't something I planned - but I like it anyway.

the way Fraser is minutely observing things around him and even, to some extent, attempting to analyze his own emotions and motivations

There's a lot more detail in this fic than I usually include. I guess it's a bit of an experiment in that sense. I'm glad it worked for you. Thanks for letting me know.

I was a little confused about what "it" was, here: he shifts his arms out from under Fraser and hooks it around Fraser’s neck

Oops. Fixed that, thanks.

I really, really like this vision of Fraser and his reflections and memories. Just when I think there can't possibly be any new character insights left, there are!

And I like "He’s been shot in the back; what’s the worst that could happen?" :)

Is that the crazy good thing about fanfic? It's like everyone writes them differently and each new interpretation is like a whole new discovery. I love that about it!

Thanks for the comments. :)
