(in no particular order)
1. New jeans- the kind where the manufacturer has tried hard to make them look faded. They are just asking for someone to put their hand in the back pocket while walking next to me. I will always think of Pete Dykema fondly when I see that kind of affection- oh how he hated it.
2. Brother's buddies over from Detroit meeting up at a local joint talking about politics and basketball. I never thought I would hear my brother speaking so democratically; he keeps saying how embarassed he is to be an American. We vowed to take a trip to Vancouver this summer- his buddies want to caravan. Jovial, drunk, togetherness-time.
3. Battling with the language game at work. I study language- as did/do many of you. I have such a hard time understanding where denotations and conotations came from and how the written word is anything but literal. I see things in print that I am expected to do, or embody, but I don't even understand the premis. It's like this: I take a class in college- something about education or astronomy or Literature- years after the class I find the syllabus in a cast aside notebook. I read what the class was supposed to be about- the point of the class- and I find myself wondering how the prof could have imagined that he was getting us close to this point through what he taught.
Or, at work, we have a mission statement, which is broken down into categories- these sound good (kinda like the constitution sounds good) but the actions behind this statement are not working toward the statement. Why has language made this ok? We accept it somehow, without getting as pissed off as we should
4. Letter from Rebecca inspiring short story which might be about memory, language, miscommunication. Her handwriting is the best I have ever seen.
5. South Side Irish Parade this Sunday. I hear lots is in store: the best greasiest pizza ever (there is a battle btw north and south side pizza here) beer on the streets, yelling in the pubs, oh and dancing, dancing dancing!
