Hope Musical Showcase at DeVos Features Variety
Posted February 17, 2005

HOLLAND - A wide range of musical styles and instruments will bring DeVos Hall alive when Hope College presents its 17th annual Musical Showcase concert on Monday, March 7, at 8 p.m. in Grand Rapids.

Hope College students take the stage for this fast-paced, musical spectacular, during which audience members hear everything from opera to jazz.

The hardest part of seeing the show for audience members is containing their enthusiasm - at least at first. In the tradition of the quick moving musical event, the audience is asked to hold its applause until intermission and the end of the performance.

The concert unveils the gifts of all Hope College’s major musical groups, along with soloists, chamber groups, and small ensembles.

With performances by the Symphonette, Women’s Chamber Choir, Jazz Ensemble and Orchestra, the first half alone will provide an evening’s worth of entertainment.

In addition, “Fragment aus dem Aeschylus” will feature soprano Sarah Blankenship, a junior from Hoffman Estates, Ill., and piano accompanist Lisa Walters, a junior from Channahon, Ill. Pianist Beth Case, a sophomore from Bloomington, Ind., will perform Aaron Copland’s “Embittered and Wistful,” and sophomore Carol Beth Steiner of Rochester, flute, will perform a work by Otar Gordeli with piano accompanist Roberta Kraft.

Showcase’s first computer-generated piece was composed and will be performed by sophomore Thomas Owens of Western Springs, Ill. Irving Berlin’s “I Love a Piano” will be performed by mezzo-soprano Kelly Sina, a freshman from Watertown, Wis., and piano accompanist Chris Turbessi, a freshman from Nunica. Sophomores Amanda Danielson of Alto and Abigail Bolkema of Flushing will perform a flute piece by Gary Schocker with pianist accompanist Aaron Hawn, a junior from Midland. Finally, the final solo performance of the first half will be an organ performance by junior Sean Daenzer of Mount Clemens of a work by Maurice Durufle.

The second half of the program will lose no momentum, with performances by the Chapel Choir, Post-Bop Jazz Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble and Wind Symphony, and a scene from the Opera Workshop.

Pianists Joseph and Christopher Turbessi, a senior and freshman respectively from Nunica, will team up for a work by Sergey Rachmaninoff, and bass trombonist Aaron Hawn, a junior from Midland, will perform David Fetter’s “Spain.” A trio featuring freshman Christopher Turbessi of Nunica, piano; sophomore Lea Blackney of Troy, violoncello; and senior Cari Chapin of Midland, flute, will perform a piece by Bohuslav Martinu. George Gershwin’s “I Got Plenty O’Nuttin” from “Porgy and Bess” will be performed by baritone Reginald D. Haney II, a junior from Harvey, Ill., with piano accompanist Joseph Turbessi, a senior from Nunica. Juniors Ross Hoksbergen of Holland and Christina Judson of Hoffman Estates, Ill., piccolo trumpets, will perform together. A highlight from “Candide” will be performed by soprano Meghan Moore, a freshman from South Bend, Ind., with piano accompanist Jennifer Wolfe.

Tickets for Musical Showcase are $10, and can be purchased through the Hope College Public Relations Office at (616) 395-7860, or through Ticketmaster at (616) 456-3333, or at the Grand Center Box Office.
