Back story

Lately, I have been considering writing down the back story to one of my D&D characters. More specifically, focusing on my main character's father. For years I've wracked my brain trying to flesh out Mandy's background so that it consists of more than a few incidents.

It's already established that she was close to her mother, but the only thing known in regards to her father was that he had died fighting in the Badger/ Bitterness war. Not only will her dad be getting a name at last, but a fleshed out history as well.

His name, after much fanagling, is Darmason Mamotte. When I considered it, I wanted it to relate to something important he was destined to do. The family name, Mamotte, translates from Japanese as "protection/protects". His given name was the tricky part: it's a mish-mash of several Portuguese words into one, de arve de masan, meaning "from the apple tree". Put it all together & it's "protection from the apple tree".

Why such a name? Well, when he first met Mandy's mother, Gerenda Kota, she was up in an apple tree trying to salvage some fruit after a recent storm had damaged it. What she realised too late was that the branch she'd been standing on was too weak for her weight & broke. Darmason, who happened to be passing by, caught her, thus saving her from serious injury.

Another aspect I mentally struggled with was personal flaws. Everyone has flaws, & Darmason was no exception. He was descended from a family of warriors, especially guardians. When news of the Bitterness wars neared, rather than fight, he left home, hoping to avoid what he felt was a pointless war. When he met (& later secretly married) Gerenda Kota, he resolved to stay with & protect her.

But war doesn't stay in one place. When it came near where he & Gerenda lived, he agreed to join the war effort. He now had a reason, a purpose to fight in the war. He had a loving & very pregnant wife he'd willing give his life to protect.

Darmason fought well in battle, but eventually he was mortally wounded in combat. After a devastating but successful battle, he dragged himself home, collapsing outside the door. Gerenda, who had given birth 3 days prior, comforted him in his last hours. When he passed, little Mandy started to cry.

For Mandy herself, I plan to have her go in search of the Mamotte clan to learn more about her father. The clan itself considers Darmason a traitor & a deserter, not knowing that he did take part in the war. It will be an interesting interaction, to say the least.

Ok, I need to sleep, soooooooo..... shutting up now. Hope I haven't bored anyone to tears with this.
