OMG totally agreed at the audience laughing part -
that's the first thing i said to jeremy after coming out of the move when we saw it for the second time. when we saw the FIRST EVER midnight showing of it a few weeks back, the audience was silent and it was great....but then when we saw it again a few weeks later, everyone laughed at the part where michele williams sees jack and ennis kiss - I mean, that was THE MOST heart breaking moment ever, and people are laughing??? i was so upset.....
okay, i haven't seen the movie (i don't like movies with too heavy of a theme) but i can understand the laughing at michelle williams seeing them kiss part: it's because a woman has just discovered that her husband is gay. how many tv sitcoms have had jokes revolving around a girl who falls for gay guys?
OK, but change the situation up a bit and imagine michelle williams seeing her husband kissing another woman. people would have been horrified, not laughing.
Is it even released in the OC yet?? That's why you need to come up to L.A. more! I'd for sure see it again... but I'll need a bit of a recovery period from the first viewing and you'll have to be ok seeing it with a cryer, haha.
I went with jenn to the grove. we missed the first show cuz it took FORTY MINUTES to get there from my house (I hate Fairfax!!)... but it was worth the wait. A movie has honestly never pulled at me like that before. I really want to see it again, but still need to recover before I do.
oh you silly boy, never take fairfax up...take crescent heights!
i def want to see it again too. and about tonight...i dunno if i'll make it out. i'm supposed to be hanging with valerie and i dunno if she'll want to go to karoake, PLUS i feel like ass still and it's 1:00 pm already
I'm glad you liked the movie. I have to admit though that i was one of the people that laughed when Alma first catches Jack and Ennis. I justify it by the expression on her face, her deer in the headlights look of utter shock. It was shocking for the audience to see Alma catch Ennis and Jack. It felt awkward and people laugh in times of awkwardness. I do agree that if Ennis were kissing a female that people wouldn't be laughing, but in the same right that would be an entirely different situation. What I found interesting though when i watched it was that the audience laughed but quickly afterwards they became silently still after realizing the seriousness of the situation. That's actually what i loved about Michelle's performance in that scene. You felt a deep sense of sympathy for Alma but you also felt a hint of guilt for laughing at her misery.
I kinda understand the "oh shit, your husband's gay, that sucks!" laugh reaction, but I think it's sad that there would be a different reaction if the situation had been "oh shit, your husband's cheating on you with another woman, that sucks!" Either way he's cheating, and either way it sucks that she had to find out that way; neither constitutes a laugh. I'm not sure why I'm so worked up about this, but it was one of the things that really really bothered me about the audience last night. And I think the audience I saw it with was different, because I didn't notice any quick cessation of laughter... it sometimes even extended into the next few lines.
But either way, I absolutely loved the movie and literally have a hard time even thinking about some of the scenes cause they were so powerful. I'm definitely going to have to see it again (btw, sorry for not inviting you... it was a very last minute thing since I was at the grove already). you should head out to fiesta tonight for karaoke!
Wow, I pretty much agree exactly with you. You worded it MUCH better than me though.
Towards the end of the movie, I wish they would have focused so much more on the relationship between Jack and Ennis...I didn't really care about the wives and ish
i think that if everything we wish would have been included actually had been, the movie would not have been so powerful. if ennis had said "I love you" or the movie had focused more on their relationship, it would have made it seem too "easy", instead of showing how truly impossible it was for these two to end up together.
