The vote had to be as close as 5-4? REALLY? That's ridiculous. For a person of any skin color to get a job promotion there should not have to be other people of minority groups in the pool if their talents do not reflect what is being sought.

If you are good at something or knowledgable in a certain field your race should not be considered, period. Nor should your competetors'. AKA, if these caucasian firemen (and one hispanic) are exceling, THEN REWARD THEM WITH THE PROMOTION. Don't insist you can not because there is not a black man who will also get rewarded.
OMG AND BECAUSE THIS RULING DID NOT TAKE SIDES WITH THE CITY AND THE FIREMEN NEEDING A BLACK MAN (AFFIRMATIVE ACTION, oh dear, oh my) SUDDENLY EVERYTHING IS SET BACK TWENTY YEARS?
