Talk about advertising!
I have watched this anime since I was 12. I love it. (I own the two TV soundtracks released, some of the radio dramas, the opening's 3" CD single, mangas, other random assorted small things, and my most cherished anime item, my Carrot Glace plushie~ :3!)
It was made back in 1995 - airing Fall of 1995 thru the Winter of 1996.

While looking for an original anime image as an example, then turning to YouTube for the clip, I came across this link and about died of laughter. The merchandising is just as bad in Japan with old cartoons as it is with Disney stuff here in the USA... sheesh.
