Tom was back up here for the weekend, since he had today off and we thought we'd make the most of it, since we won't see each other for two weeks (either one of us traveling every weekend is just impractical). We went to a local library book sale on Saturday (fill a bag for $5! do we need any of these books? no! who cares! they're books!) and did
nice fall-ish outdoorsy things Sunday. Stopped by a farm up past Trenton to get apples and a loaf of nommy gingerbread, and then spent the rest of the day in New Hope, PA - spent probably an hour in the bookshop there, they're an independent bookstore in an old building with piles of books and a Most Ancient Cat, how could I not love that kind of place? Managed to sniff out the only silk scarf in bins and bins of polyester in a vintage clothing shop and was very pleased with myself. Had dinner at one of the many good restaurants in town, and headed home when it got dark, because we'd walked all over town and somehow 7pm felt like 10. And today we just stayed in and snuggled til it was time for him to drive back.
All that to say, I didn't really do any sewing from 4pm Friday to about 6pm tonight!
Friday before work I pleated up the chartreuse skirt and got the waistband ribbon partly sewn on. And I did get my roll of black twill tape in the mail Saturday though (twill tape is my non-HA hem binding for 1860s skirts. I know it's not going to hold up as well as wool braid but...it costs a fraction of wool braid, and let's be real, my 1860s dresses just do not get that much wear), so I bound the hem tonight, which means it's done apart from a hook and bar -- which will get put on next time I've got my corset on.
Hello stacked box pleats. I did this once with wool flannel. That was not the brightest thing I ever did...even in silk it's over 1/4" thick in some places, so imagine it in wool flannel...
And gingerly trying on with the pleats just basted to make sure they didn't look awful. Yeah, looks okay over a hoop!
After finishing the hem binding, I also cut out a mockup for the dinner bodice. (Pip started eating Patterns of Fashion 2 that I had laid out for reference, and had to be locked up.) I seem to have lost my most recent 1860s bodice pattern (oops), so I used the basic one I made in...2013? At least? If not earlier? Needless to say I'm sure the fit will take some tweaking, but I knew I'd have to do some tweaking anyway, to get the "tails" and lower square neckline I want. Maybe I'll get that done tomorrow? Not sure exactly why I feel motivated to work on the dinner dress when it's the thing I need the least, but we'll roll with it for now.
