Captain Jack Aubrey of the Lively sat and watched his dearest friend, Dr. Stephen Maturin, sleep. He'd never felt such anger as he had when he saw the state Stephen was in when they found him early that morning. Clearly, the doctor had been tortured severely, yet he'd maintained enough presence of mind to ensure that valuable information was gathered and lives were saved. Jack could only imagine how much it must have cost his friend to remain awake and aware while in so much pain. He was slowly realizing that there was more to Stephen than met the eye.
